I used to encode at 8Mbps CBR for material I transfer from VHS/LD to DVD. Sometimes this doesn't play well on a standalone DVD player, you will see macro blocks, but they play okay on a PC. I wonder whether most standalone DVD player will work with CBR-disc, or in general, we should encode with VBR?

all players supports cbr and vbr.
which encoder are you using? -
You've got something wrong with your burner, player, discs...Sometimes this doesn't play well on a standalone DVD player, you will see macro blocks,
VBR takes advantage of squeezing as much as you can onto a disk by allocating bitrates more economically...
