    Ford: "Indy 4" Script Ready

Looks like Harrison Ford can finally take the fedora out of mothballs.

The Hollywood megastar told a German magazine on Wednesday that after rewrites too numerous to count, he and director Steven Spielberg are finally satisfied with the script for the forever-in-the-works fourth installment of the whip-wielding, tomb-raiding adventurer.

"Steven Spielberg and I now have a script in hand that we both like. I believe that we can start with the filming soon," Ford was quoted as saying in an interview with Fit for Fun, a German lifestyle and entertainment magazine.

The 63-year-old actor, who's been making the publicity rounds this month for Firewall--his first certifiable action thriller since 1997's Air Force One--demurred, however, on a start date.

That depends on the busy schedules of the Indiana Jones triumvirate of Ford, Spielberg and producer George Lucas. But Ford indicated he was ready to get back into the swing of things, adding that he needed "to do a little practicing with the whip" to avoid injuries.

Ford's reps did not comment further, and a Lucasfilm spokesperson said Wednesday that Lucas was not available to comment on the status of Indy 4. But appearing at last week's Empire Awards in London, his producing partner, Rick McCallum, said Lucas had made his final tweaks to the script by Jeff Nathanson (Rush Hour and Catch Me If You Can) and handed it off to his two pals for final tweaking.

"[George has] just finished the Indiana Jones script, and Steven's having that rewritten and a few things done," McCallum said, according to published reports.

Spielberg's publicist, Marvin Levy, confirmed as much to E! Online.

"[The script] certainly seems to be [in the can], but I don't think we're at that point where we have a firm start date," Levy said. "But this is certainly the closest where we've been in this whole development process."

Levy also denied an earlier report that Spielberg was considering taking a year off after doing War of the Worlds and Munich back to back. He said the two-time Oscar winner is working not only on getting Indy 4 off the ground, but also Lincoln, his upcoming biopic on Abraham Lincoln that will reunite him with his Schindler's List star, Liam Neeson.

"I think it's much more likely that he will do an Indy movie before he does Lincoln. The Lincoln script is not as far in the development stage and...frankly, Steven may not want to do another serious movie after doing a Munich," Levy said.

He noted it's possible Spielberg "would be starting something before 2007."

It's been a slow, tortuous march to production since the project was officially announced in January 2002. The trio brought in Oscar-nominated writer-director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) to take a crack at writing a story about the aging archaeologist, but Lucas vetoed the draft, putting Indy 4 on hold indefinitely until Nathanson found an angle that pleased the principals.

By the time Indy 4 does get rolling--this year or next--Ford will have turned 64 and will probably be 65 by the time Paramount releases the movie in theaters. The actor is next set to play Colonel Everton Conger, the man who tracked down Abraham Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, in Manhunt, which starts filming next month.

As I understand it, Darabont did some sort of "Atlantis" scenario that the honchos thought was too far-fetched ... which was eventually used as a model for a video game. Nathanson went back to the drawing board and came up with a different idea.

BTW, a few years ago, a buddy of mine in Burbank, CA who works in and around film studios (including Paramount) emailed me the script for "Star Trek - Insurrection" a full month before it was released. And, with a few ad-libbed variations, the final film matched the script (grin). Anyhoo, I asked him about any rumors he may have heard surrounding Indy4. He doesn't have the script ... yet ... but he told me he knows what Nathanson's high-concept pitch was to the studio people. Below is what he told me ... in a tiny font for those who'd sooner not know:

Indiana Jones has retired from his adventurous lifestyle to the cloisters of academia. He's married (Karen Allen, possible wife) with one child and spends all his time as a professor of archaeology for his university. Then one day, he's approached by government men who want him to participate in a "simple" task. He's suspicious, of course, but the task "seems" simple. Apparently, the Navy now has the means to raise a sunken Nazi submarine. The story goes that, near the end of Hitler's reign, he'd used a submarine to smuggle out significant archaeological artifacts. While enroute to Argentina, it was sunk by Allied forces. The intriguing part is that Navy divers have discovered that the chamber where the artifacts are likely stored appears to have remained "airtight." And, they want to raise the sub, recover the artifacts, and want Indy to identify and catalogue them.

Of course, it isn't that simple (grin). Unknown to Indy, there's a competitor racing to the scene to attempt raising the sub. The competition? A group of Neo-Nazis. These neo-Nazis are led by a man believed to be Indy's "brother" (a brother Indy's dad didn't tell him about - possibly played by Kevin Costner). And while there may be artifacts on board the sub, there are three things more precious about the sub and cargo:

    1) The "airtight" compartment contains the cryogenically preserved Adolf Hitler himself.

    2) The cargo also contains a large cache of gold ingots.

    3) The sub itself was a secret Nazi "prototype" sub - nuclear powered.

With the sub recovered, the neo-Nazis plan to attempt reviving Hitler. And, with the gold and a nuclear sub at their disposal, plan on ushering in the "4th Reich."

    OK, spoiler over (grin).

P.S. BTW, there are going to be "two" versions of the film shown in theaters. One will be a standard theatrical release (like the previous 3). The other version is going to be in 3D (yup, special glasses required).

  12. Connery Could Be Back for INDIANA JONES
Thursday April 6 2:04 PM ET

With no official word or deals signed, Harrison Ford has hinted that he would like Sean Connery to reprise his Indiana Jones role for the impending fourth installment.

    By Sawsan Antoun, FilmStew.com

The fourth installment of Indiana Jones may be moving up the development ladder faster than expected. After months of conflicting reports about the status of the action-adventure franchise, anxious fans can relax a bit now that several players, especially actor Harrison Ford, have expressed their commitment to the project.

As FilmStew reported last month, Ford told German magazine Fit for Fun, "Steven Spielberg and I now have a script in hand that we both like. I believe that we can start with the filming soon."

In a new tidbit about the project, Ford, in a recent interview with BBC1, happily hinted that Sir Sean Connery could be reprising his role as Indy's father, a role the Oscar-winning Connery originated in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Connery, who is currently linked to a cameo in the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale, is currently at his Bahamas home recovering from surgery to remove a benign tumor.

Spielberg is attached to direct the fourth installment, with George Lucas and Frank Marshall producing. Despite reports that the director is taking a year hiatus, Ford's publicist, Marvin Levy, believes that Spielberg "would be starting something before 2007," according to E! Online, and that Indiana Jones would be the perfect follow-up to the heavy drama Munich.

While in Sydney promoting his new film Eight Below, producer Marshall opened up about Indiana 4. "It is still on the front burner," Marshall told reporters. "We really have to get the story right. The story has to be really good for any of us to do it, and there are three pretty strong-willed creative minds involved in saying yes."

It would rock if Connery reprised his role. He probably doesn't need to be a key figure in it, but if he was, that'd add to the whole movement, I feel.
