For freeware you can't really beat ffmpeg / ffmpegGUI. Definatly not the best quality AC3 encoder though as good as it gets for free.

I second ffmpeggui for AC3 output. If it doesn't accept MP3, then any decent free audio editor will do MP3 to WAV - Audacity is one, and maybe CDex.

It does support mp3. libavcodec/format can handle most commonly used stuff.

  5. mind you, doing this will deteriorate the audio quality some, depending on what your doing, you may be better just leaving it in mp3...if you need it in ac3, though, you would be best to resource it directly from the disc it came from (if we are speaking audio cd sources, of course, not like recordings done other ways)

Whatever AC-3 encoder you use I would make sure that you first get your source file into a WAV file fisrt ... then convert to AC-3.

Alot of people try to go straight from say MP3 to AC-3 without first converting the MP3 to a WAV.

So at least you got that part correct

Most AC-3 encoding solutions are expensive. ffmpeggui is really the only freeware solution that I am aware of.

However the company that makes TMPGEnc DVD Author has an AC-3 encoder you can buy that is meant to be a plug-in for TMPGEnc DVD Author but can also work as a stand alone AC-3 converter. I costs $29 but is considered to make better and more compliant AC-3 audio files than ffmpeggui.

Fail to see any real difference between decoding to wav and encoding and encoding direct from mp3 other than the fact that one takes longer and requires more HDD space.

I base my comments on the fact that in the past I've had trouble with BeSweet when I didn't start out with a 16-bit 48k 2 channel PCM WAV file. Maybe it was just a BeSweet "quirk" but other than the slight extra time and HDD space (both of which are minor) I think it pays to play it safe.

Yes, mp3 to wave first then wave to ac3. I do have tmpgenc dvd author but my editing system is not connected to internet, and will never be. So I heard Tmpgenc dvd needs internet to keep ac3 up to date or something to the effect it needs the internet. I don't know, I believe I read something before about that. cdex maybe my answer. Thanks
