Can dvd re:recordable disks copy items over and over again much the
same as a video cassette tape can do if one records material using a dvd
recorder. And if so which dvd recordable disk should i use .

You want DVD+RW or DVD-RW
Those are the two types of DVD discs that can be recorded on and then erased and used again and again and again.
They don't last forever and will eventually start to give you errors after you use and erase, use and erase, use and erase a few times but they last "long enough" before this starts to happen.
I would go with DVD+RW if you can because it seems most of the DVD+RW discs are 4x discs whereas most of the DVD-RW discs I have seen are only 2x discs.
I've used Sony 4x DVD+RW discs with great results as well as Maxell 2x DVD-RW discs.
