I'm trying to learn how to encode avi's to DVD with ffmpegX.
    I'm using version 0.0.9u.
I have some experience with TMPGEnc on the PC, so I'm not a total n00b.

I opened an avi then I selected DVD ffmpeg because I read it encodes faster.
Then I hit encode in the Summary window.

    Here's the Process Information:

Encoding started on Wed Mar 15 16:10:53 CST 2006
Mac OSX static build for ffmpegX
    Input #0, avi, from '/Users/macuser/Movies/Football/Misc/xvid_Test.avi':
    Duration: 00:00:26.3, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 974 kb/s
    Stream #0.0, 23.98 fps: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x480
    Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 44100 Hz, stereo, 128 kb/s
    Output #0, rawvideo, to '/Users/macuser/Movies/Football/Misc/xvid_Test.avi.ff.avi.mpv':
    Stream #0.0, nan fps: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, q=2-20, 4000 kb/s
    Stream mapping:
    Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
    video:12928kB audio:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.000000%
    bench: utime=22.866s
error: movie contains no audio tracks!
I got it to produce a video_ts folder before but that was a month ago when I first tested ffmpegx.
I can't remember what I did that was different so I don't know what's wrong this time.

  2. Is your partition named "Macintosh HD"? If it is, changing it to a name with no spaces might help.

The icon on the desktop says Macintosh HD so I changed it to "MacintoshHD".
    I'm still getting the error.

Do you have the DivX Decoder component for QuickTime installed? I recently went through something sort of like what you mention and that cleared it up for me.

I downloaded DivX 6 for Mac.
    http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/download/?hp3macdl

It Worked!! Thanks very much for the help!

How did you find out that was the problem?
I'm really curious to know how you solved this problem.

I don't see how the divx decoder and the dvd encoder are related.

I found out about it when some very nice folks here helped me with a similar problem. It is SO nice to have questions answered without sarcastic attitudes. Everybody has to learn sometime and friendly helpful folks make that a pleasure.

Now I've got a new problem (as expected).
When I burned a DVD and played it on TV it was skipping.
When I play the VOBs on my computer they play smoothly but the video skips on TV.

Some standalone DVD players don't fully tolerate DVDs encoded with the ffmpeg engine. Try encoding to DVD using the DVD mpeg2enc encoder. It's slower but more compatible.

When going with 23.976 fps on DVD, you'll need to set a 3:2 pulldown on the video.
For mpeg2enc encodings, this is a checkbox in Options.
For ffmpeg encodings, you'll have to use the Pull tool on the m2v file.
