fire it up with the old monitor and then switch monitors and see what happens

  3. Do you mean leave the pc running just take the lead out the back for the monitor? will it harm anything doing this?

Your resolution in Windows was set for the old monitor rather than the new one and was outside it's display range (refresh or resolution). You could have also booted into safe or VGA mode and made the proper changes to the display. Doing it while you were logged in to Windows basically enabled the plug-and-play detection of the monitor. You should still make sure your video settings are correct for the new monitor and that it shows up as the make and model in your device manager.

It's not OK if you plan to set up color spaces for design applications. Windows needs the proper driver for the monitor in order to do that. And in most cases it's best to have the proper driver for the monitor rather than the default "plug and play monitor" driver just to avoid the random BSODs that may come of it.

well true -- but many people don't bother .

you need the correct ICM profile for your monitor , which should have come with it - or on their website

but having it at plug and play will not cause the BSOD issues

Everything can cause BSODs with Windows

I have actually had the monitor cause a failure. Swapped a 15" CRT for a 15" LCD and as soon as I plugged her in I got a BSOD. Rebooted it with the old monitor and it was fine, rebooted it with the LCD in regular boot, safe, and VGA modes and it wouldn't get past this Windows boot logo before going down. I can't recall what the specific error was, I think an IRQ error of all things, but once I installed the proper driver for the monitor and then swapped them out it worked OK. This was with Win2k FWIW.
