What is the best software for easily making perfect exact copies onto DVD+R DL (Just got in on the Verbatim deal and itchy to try it out!) I know that some DVD players are picky about needing the booktype set to DVD-R so that's a must have feature. Any advice?

Thanks for the reply. I thought I read that DVDDecrypter was having some trouble with certain copy protections on new discs?

You could use DVD43 along with DVD Decrypter for backing up your DVDs to DL from newer discs. Or ANYDVD, though DVD43 is freeware.

When you burn with DVD Decrypter, be sure you create the additional MDS file. The ISO Decrypter makes does not contain layer break data, but the MDS does. Otherwise DVD Decrypter will guess at a new layer break location, and it may not work as well.

DVDDecrypter does indeed have problems with the copy protection on certain discs. You can find some workarounds on the Internet about it, but it's very complicated. It may be easier to just rip these discs with DVDFabDecrypter and then using PGCedit to make an ISO. Look at:
    https://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/Burning%20With%20PgcEdit.htm
for instructions on how to use PGCedit to force 32k gaps between BUPs and IFOs before making an ISO.

    THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES!

Criminy - I was hoping for a simple "catch all" program that can do every DVD I throw at it easily Does that exist in free / cheap form?

I've been cloning DL DVD's with AnyDVD and CloneCD with perfect success. It makes a complete cloned copy of any DL DVD on DL media.

I've done alot of DL+ backups, the only thing i have used is DVD Decrypter, period!!

The few dvd's i have come accross that did have the newer protection on them that DVD Decrypter would not rip, then i just used DVDFab Decrypter, are not worth doing a DL backup anyways, movie only with very little compression if any to a single layer.

I have a few that i have authored and burned to DL+ with DVD Decrypter and let DVD Decrypter set the layer break and they worked fine.

    All tool's free.

If your doing a DL burn, DVDD in iso read/write mode doesn't have problems with newer copy protections, but it does leave them on your copy. This is only applicable to ISO mode.

Is it better to do ISO copy and write, or the whole "VIDEO_TS" folder full of files? Is one method better?

When you do ISO read & write, it is for all intense purposes, an exact copy!!
Except for any copy protection on the original as DVD Decrypter strips these.

When you do and ISO read & write it copies the AUDIO_TS folder, the VIDEO_TS folder and all the contents within & contained on the original disc, if you rip in file mode to get the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder you can not burn back to dvdr with DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.

You seem to be making it harder than it has to be, if you read what most seem to be saying, it's easy, ISO read, ISO write, done

It is your personal preference as to whether you want a bunch of files or one file that is the image.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

Thanks all - ISO burn with DVDDecrypter and ImgBurn it is! Appreciate all the insight. I did read some of the guides here on the website, but they're so darned old that I wasn't sure they were still applicable. (Most are from 2003 it looks like!)

I should have said structure protection, not copyright protection, which is removed. Some of the newer structure protections that DVDD has trouble with aren't an issue if you do a DL iso rip/burn, but they are still there on your copy.

I keep running into a basic (user) error of some sort with this method. "Drive could not be locked for exclusive access," or words to that effect. Possibly this has something to do with media change, and prompting for same, in a system with one DVD drive only ? If I was using an outboard drive for the reading / ripping portion, I would probably not be seeing this ? I know that Shrink ejects the original and prompts you to load the blank. DVDD (or any decently designed program) must do the same, but I've been super cautious about inadvertently doing some damage to the original with the burner and any program I'm not completely familiar with, so I've been ejecting the original and replacing it with the blank before starting the ISO --> Write phase. Is unchecking the Settings box for "Lock Drive for exclusive access" a way to avoid this error, or a bad idea ?

Anyway, doing it the way I've been doing it, and choosing 'Ignore' when that error has come up, does not seem to have screwed up the results. The backups seem to play just fine. I have made sure the MD5 file was created -- as LS recommended for the layer break -- but I haven't messed with the booktype setting.

My theory on that is that another piece of software is monitoring the drive and causing the conflict. Check out the CD and DVD software you have, and also other media players. I'd guess that one or more is not letting DVDD lock the drive exclusively.

DVDD has been sort of freezing up while reading some used DVDs to ISO. DVDFabD has worked on those discs... Weird.

    Lately ... I've been using ... AnyDVD >> CloneDVD2 >> DVDShrink ISO >> DVD Decrypter >> Verbatim +R DL

But just recently I tried ... Cyberlink Power2Go version 5 [Trial Ware for 30 days] to burn the ISO Image that CloneDVD2 makes and that DVDShrink makes ... I did the same movie both times ... DOOM [I definitely gots some extra copies lying around].

    AND ... then ... I tried ... AnyDVD >> CloneDVD2 >> Cyberlink PowerDVD Copy version 1 ... >>>> Verbatim +R DL ... no problem.

I did this again ... but I used Fuji +R DL ......... no problem [movie was ... 2 For The Money]

    Best Buy ... Fuji +R DL ... 15 for $30 bucks ... until March 25th 2006

I like using CloneDVD ... for removing the Trailers and the other garbage I dont care to include.

It would be interesting to try AnyDVD >> Cyberlink PowerDVD Copy version 1 >>> to +R DL disk ... and see how well things work out.

I got my Verbatims for $1.69 each after rebate, and from what I've read they're about the best around. I'm wanting only exact copies of the original, with all special feature and everything else retained.

  26. I've only burned a few DL disks using the DVD Decrypter. The disks play fine in terms of video and don't stop when it hits the DL break. BUT I have audio sync problems that are really annoying. Do any of you who use DVD Decrypter also get audio sync problems on your DL burns?

Is there any way around this using DVD Decrypter? Or is there another tool for DL burns that won't give audio sync issues?

Also, with Nero's updates, does anyone know if it's gotten any better for DL burns?
