I've always assumed that 23.98 DV was progressive, though I've recently had a program imply that a certain clip was not. (For the sake of discussion and trigger-happy moderators, I'm not discussing programs here.) If not progressive, then I'm assuming it meant interlaced. In spite of what it told me, it used the clip just fine as though it was progressive after all.

So am I wrong to assume that all 23.98 DV is progressive?

  2. I think all 29.97 dv is interlaced, not sure about 23.98.

  3. 23.976 frame per second progressive DV contains progressive images packaged in a 29.97 frame per second DV stream. The frames go through a 3:2 pulldown process to create the standard 29.97 frame per second DV format.

Note that 29.97 frame per second DV can be either progressive or interlaced. It's a matter of whether the two fields that make up each frame were taken from the same exposure.

is this a function of the type of camera?

Yes, most camcorders only support interlaced. Some have a 29.97 fps progressive mode. My old Canon Optura PI has both.

  6. I just took a look at the optura Pi specs in the manual. The image sensor sais:
    1/4” Progressive Scan CCD
    (charge coupled device) 380,000 pixels
    (360,000 effective pixels)
Progressive scan ccd is the key factor I take it...
Ive got a zr50mc and the specs say:
Image sensor: 1/6” CCD (charge coupled device) approx. 460,000 pixels (approx. 290,000 effective pixels)
...nothing in there about progressive scan, guess that would mean I don't have it.

Your camcorder would have a setting called "Frame Mode".

In truth all Camcoders record Interlaced video to tape. The difference is that Standard Mode recording captures fields in different time instance. Progressive 24p and Frame Mode 24-30 fps capture both fields in the same time instance.
