    The quality is as only as good as its source......but is there anything that can improve (background images in particular) of a already "dvd-shrinked" dvd movie?

    you can use some avisynth filters but it 's not worth all the work.

  3. Once the quality is gone, it's gone forever!

    You could filter the video with various AVISynth filters to soften the artifacts, but you'd end up reencoding the video which will take another hit on the quality.

    If you're not happy with the results of DVd Shrink, you can always go back to the main source (commercial DVD) and use an alternative dvd compression software like DVD-RB with CCE for example
