  1. Hiya,

I've heard that quadrophonic LPs can be decoded almost perfectly using anything which can play back dolby pro logic II [as long as you set the centre width to have the centre speaker completely on both left and right [quad decoders/amps never had a centre speaker]]. What I'm looking for as a poor student is some software which will play back a WAV file [which I've recorded from a Quad LP] through a built in DPLII decoder.

I recently had a problem with WinDVD 7 crashing when playing back a 5.1 DTS CD, but it randomly started working. so it can definitely interface with my external Audigy NX. WinDVD 7 Platinum seems to have the option in the Audio Centre under "Technology>Expansion", when you do select Dolby Pro Logic II Music Mode and play back the WAV file, highly annoyingly it de-selects the dplII music mode and just plays back in stereo.

Could this be because the recorded audio is not a good enough encoding for the player to think it is DPLII? if so does anyone have any WAV samples please of maybe a channel test or something encoded in DPLII for me to test it with? and if this isn't the case... could anyone suggest a solution?

[also, I know this forum isn't particularly audio-based... don't know a better place to ask though, could anyone suggest one please?]

Hi, you can use our DS filter, and windows media player (for example), to play wave files, or directly a CD audio.
This will decode the source DPLII stereo downmix to 5.1 stream on the fly. Also, if the stereo file is not DPLII downmix, you may switch to pseudosurround algorithm, which will create a spatial 5.1 panorama.

To obtain the 5.1 sound, you must chose 5.1 output in the filter (as shown below)

Please read more about this here:

  3. This sounds excellent, thanks - however, I can't actually find anywhere in the software where I can select either DPLII or pseudosurround. I have a feeling the version I've downloaded is a codec yet your help docs talk about getting a DS filter version or something. I just get stereo output. Can't find the screen shown on your guides either where you can select "Your sound system is surround (5.1)". In general, I'm confused would you mind giving me a step by step way of playing back a DPLII encoded WAV file please? I'm using winamp although would use another player if necessary.

You need the latest version (Aud-X v1.2).
It is a direct show filter, thus you need a fully direct show compatible player (winamp is only partly compatible).

After you start playing the sound in the player, Aud-X icon will appear
in the tray. Double click on it to access the DirectShow interface.

I think that for music, the best choice is the latest windows media player (hmm... I hate to advertise anything what comes from microshit...but this player is pretty good )
