It's hooked up directly to a USB port on my motherboard. The MB contains 4 rear and two forward ones hooked up via the case. The only one that device manager shows as a, "USB 2.0 Root Hub" is the one that lists "Hauppauge WinTV PVR2 USB2 Encoder" under device description. As the driver listed for this is ..\..\usbhub20.sys ...

All other USB devices connected to my computer are USB 1.1, a mouse and a HP scanner. Both of these are listed as "USB Root Hub" and the driver is usbhub.sys.

For grins I changed out the driver of one of these to usbhub20.sys. It happen to be my mouse which stopped working. I switched ports and and reinstalled the old driver. Switched back and everthing is working as before.

It does sound as though I'm only getting USB 1.1 for the PRV even though it seems to be hooked to a USB 2.0 port. Am I missing something obvious here? Any suggestions on how to confirm if it's really hooked to USB 2.0?

P.S. I'm going to install and try out the PVR2 with my laptop and see what I get there. That'll at least confirm (I hope) that it's a USB issue with my desktop. I'll let you guys / gals know what I find out.

P.S.S. Everthing worked fine on my laptop ... no limitations ... so it appears that it's the USB 2 root hub on my desktop that's the culpruit ... any recommendations / suggestions?

Thanks. It looks like it recognizes the port as USB 2.0. I've love the card ... any really I'd probably only use the DVD Long Play option ... but I'd really like to be able to use the higher capture bit rates ... any other suggestions?

I sent an email to their Tech Support this morning. I don't really expect much but you never know.

    In terms of my system, I'm running a P4 Northwood 2.6-GHz, 800-MHZ FSB. I have 1024-MB of DDR400 RAM running in dual channel mode. All my harddrives are 7200-RPM (2 ATA100 & 2 SATA150).

Anyway, according to the users manual, even if I were limited to USB 1.1 speeds ... DVD Standard play mode should still work.

Thanks again guys ... I'll let you know if I solve this one.

  7. Do you have anything plugged into the USB port next to the PVR USB2? I seem to recall that mixing 1.x and 2.0 devices on the same controller can sometimes cause the 2.0 device to slow down to 1.x.

I have a bunch of trouble using any USB storage device when I am using my USB2 PVR. My laptop (VIA K8 chipset) will freeze about an hour after I connect USB storage while using the PVR. This includes memory cards or Hard Drives. It has happened through many generations of the drivers. , both Hauppauge and VIA. I bought a Fire Wire drive as a work around.

I was thinking this too, but you'll usualy get a message from windows notifying you that your device is being slowed down, and it probably wouldn't show up in the 2.0 hub.

Try unplugging everything from usb if you can, even your mouse, and hook up a ps2 keyboard and mouse if you have any, see what happens. If that has no affect, the only thing left is mobo, driver, or windows being windows...

Perhaps a new USB PCI card might be in order.

I know people that have had to buy FIREWIRE PCI cards because the device they have that is FIREWIRE didn't like the FIREWIRE built-in to the computer.

Could be a USB chipset incompatability.

Update. I exchanged several emails with Hauppauge tech support. They were professional and tried to be helpfull. Update my video card drives, directshow from 9.0b to 9.0c ... still the same error.

    Two other interesting thing:

    1. I use Norton Ghost 2003 to image and backup my O/S & Application partition. This boot disk (actually set of 2 discs) USB and firewire drive support. On boot up my boot disks suddenly starting hanging. I disconnected the Hauppauge from my computer and had the same problem. I remade the disks and still had the same problem. I remade the disks without USB or firewire support, the worked. I then tried with firewire and no USB and that worked even with the Hauppauge connected to my PC. So it appears that something about the Hauppauge software, drivers or decoder that has been installed causes the Norton Boot disk to hang. This makes no sense to me since because none of this is even remotely loaded (that I know of) when booting from a floppy.

    2. Every few minutes (10 to 30) I get a stutter when watching live TV. Searching the web on this is an indication of dropped frames. It could be on a lot of these that something else was running. But it also seems to happen when nothing else obvious is running ... So maybe I do have some sort of USB 2.0 / chipset incompatability with the Hauppauge.

We get discounts on MS software through work. So I picked up a copy of Windows XP Home SP2 (full version) for $62. I imaged my O/S & Applications partition, save that to my firewire drive, format that partition and install XP Home SP2. I install the necessary sound and video drives and then I install the TV tuner card. I now can record in the higher modes. So it was a software and / or driver conflict with the Win-TV-PRV2. I'll probably stick with XP Home. I planning on doing a mean and lean reinstall of my key applications. I always have the image of my W2k Pro w/apps if things go South though.
