Virtual Dub Preview

I have been attempting to remove a video segment from an AVI file (divx 6).
When I select the segment I wish to remove (intro to show) The preview shows the right amount of footage removed.

When I save file as AVI all but the final few seconds of the video segment I wanted removed is gone. Most is gone but this seems strange.
When I remove a segment from the end of the file it is fine and what I wish removed is removed. It is just at the beginning of the file that the problem occurs.

Does anyone have any advise.

Do you save in Full Processing Mode, or Direct Stream Copy ? Full Processing allows for frame accurate cutting. Direct Stream Copy is I-frame accurate only.

...but Full Processing will reencode the whole movie, while Direct stream wont.

Hold down the shift key while moving the seek bar or pressing the arrow keys to stop only on keyframes. You'll see [K] next to the frame number in the status area when on a Keyframe.

In Direct Stream Copy mode any segment you are keeping must start on a keyframe. It can end on any frame. If you mark the start of a segment on a non keyframe VirtualDub will automatically start that segment on the keyframe immediately before the mark.

If you are only cutting out one sement (or just a few) you can use Direct Stream Copy mode to copy the bulk of the movie without reencoding. Then use Full Processing Mode to reencode the small section that requires it. Finally join all segments back together again with the Append AVI Sement option.

I was doing Direct stream as I dont need to reencode. IT is the keyframe that was causing it not to cut the whole section out.

The K frame position seems to be very erratic!

Full Processing Mode. Or follow Jagabo's advice and do it in sections.

That's because the moron who did the encode didn't know what he/she was doing.
(or didn't create the AVI with further editing in mind)

The default for Divx or Xvid is to create a keyframe every 300 frames or at a detected scene change, whichever comes first. Note that fade outs and crossfades are usually not detected as a scene change.
