I searched and found one thread - but no complete answer.

Is there a way to duplicate DVD Upconverting in the file itself?

With the goal for it to play the 'better looking' upconverted file no matter what DVD player it is in.

upconvert it to what - to be played back back on what ?

since it already compressed - generally speaking, the least amount of re-compression you do - the better

  3. The upconversion can only be done by the DVD player itself (or whatever device that play it). Simply put, the DVD player expect the video file to be one of the DVD standard (not upconverted), if the file is upconverted, it will not play it.

Upconvert to 'HD' (Brackets because it isn't really HD) like the upconverting DVD players do.

I'm guessing they apply a variety of filters and run the data through some algorithim that gives the perception that the image is better.

Is some variation of this available in software that you can run the backed up DVD data through to 'improve' it? Either to play on your PC or in a stand alone player.

Edit: Both my DVD players will play out of standard mpeg2 files. I have run total bitrates as high as 13000 in them with no problems so it never occured to that my player's may choke on an out of compliance conversion. At the least I would expect that my PC's DVD player should play it.

Upconverting always enhances the noise ratio in my opinion. Overrated "feature".

    Thanks for the reply.

I'll take your word for it, but I have to assume that regardless of what is actually being changed the result is that the majority of people seem to see an improvement (I believe when plugged up through HDMI or optical out.) I suspect that it is one of those things where it 'fools' the average eye rather than improving the picture.

Out of curiousity I'd like to know if it can be duplicated and encoded onto the disc.

Are you saying you have a HDTV?

Are you saying you have a normal DVD player? How to you connect it to your HDTV?

What sources are you talking about? Normal DVD must be 720x480/576.

If you have a HDTV source, various techniques can optimize downsizing to 720x480. Some players will handle MPeg4 HDTV material.

The best way to impprove your 720x480 DVD is to start with the highest quality source.

Noise often fools people into thinking a picture has "more detail".

Just look at all the suckers who think Panasonic DVD recorders give the best quality ever. Those are notorious for having "sharp" videos that are nothing more than images filled with noise.

You need to think through what you are asking. You have that capability in hardware on your display card. It's called "Full Screen"*.

    What card are you using?
What DVD player software are you using?

*There is no difference between "full screen" upscaling on a graphics card and standalone DVD player upscaling other than the the display card is upscaling to your monitors resolution settings vs. DVD players scaling to 720p or 1080i. Larger issues remain about how interlace native DVD's are processed, whether automatic IVTC is included and how well it works. Progressive DVDs are easily scaled for progressive computer displays. You need purpose designed playback software to get the best performance from your graphics cards. PowerDVD and WinDVD full versions are good low cost solutions for the consumer.
