I have 60-min 2.7GB DVD MPG2 recorded from SatTV using my Winfast TV 2000/XP. Using VideoRedo to cut commercials , which is about 10 min, the resulting file is only 900MB. Why so much smaller ? What VideoRedo actually did with the MPG2 ?
From my calculation, if 60 min = 2.7 GB, then after cutting 10-min commercial, it should be about 2.2GB.
I tried to look at the MPG2 properties of the original & the result of VideoRedo, but both seems to exactly the same in term of quality, resolution, etc.

Another 60-min 2.5GB MPEG after VideoRedo (cutting off 10-min commercial) is about 1.1 GB .
What actually determines the final size ?

  2. Bitrate. If the commercials are very high bitrate, and the show is low, then cutting 10 minutes out of it, could result in a much smaller file.
Make sure videoredo isn't decreasing the framesize and bitrate of the whole show.

Videoredo only re-encodes a frame on either side of a cut and that is it. If your file is smaller than it should be it is probably because one or more your cuts was not defined properly.

VRD has a fantastic forum with very active VRD technical help. Go there and in no time at all Dan or Pat will get you on the right track.

I have checked the MPG file resulted from VideoRedo, and I don't see any defects from the cut. The cut is done nicely & correctly at the right positions. The MPG properties are also exactly the same in term of bitrate, resolution, framerate, etc. But I just don't understand why the resulting cut seems to be much smaller.

  5. What does Videoredo say is the size of the final file in terms of time. You may need to run QuickStream fix on the file before editing. I would recommend looking over the VideoRedo forums for additional help. The response is excellent.
