is 2 pass much better or not worth the extra time? I always choose 'best' quality when i render mpg2, but wanted to see if ppl think it's better to do the 2 pass on video

I prefer a 2 or 3 pass VBR in most cases, although DV usually gets the CBR treatment. 1 pass VBR is pointless as you have little or no control over the resulting size. Similarly with CQ mode, file size is not predictable. And there is little point using CQ mode, only to have to use DVD Shrink afterwards to make it fit.

I am rendering a 1 hour 15 minute movie, doing mpg2 VBR best quality settings and 2 pass, Is it possilbe that the file size will be too big to fit on the dvd?

Use a bitrate calculator to get it to fit.

i'm actually worried now that i might spend 30 hours rendering this and it won't even fit properly onto the dvd, is it safer to render as an .avi file instead of doing the mpg2?

i can use the calculator but i also have some other bonus videos i needed to fit onto the disc as well as this movie

  8. Add up the running time of all the video and use that value in the calculator.

No way is it going to take 30 hours on your machine. Even a 2 pass VBR with tmpgenc wont take that long. I can do a 3 pass VBR (+ analysis pass) of a 90 minute movie in around 4.5 hours or less on my machine using CCE.

As for space, if you know oyur bonus material is going to be very small, use the overhead facility that most bitrate calculators have to preserve some space, otherwise just add it into the main count.

yea this is crazy, last night i canceled my rendering cause it was 30 hours using 2pass, and i did 1 pass, and today it still says 15 hours left

i wonder why it's so long for me to render this project, maybe the graphics or multiple layers increases rendering time on projects?

What software are you using to encode? Are you doing any filtering?

In my opinion 1 pass CBR using CCE Basic does as well as 1 or 2 pass VBR. In most cases multiple passes does not buy you much.

If your bitrate is high enough then CBR is fine. If bitrate is limited because you're trying to get a lot of time on a disk, then it's best to use VBR to keep quality. Depends on the situation when using CBR or VBR.

How do i make sure i'm using Tmpegnc codec when encoding? I only went to render as mpg2, i don't think Vegas asked me what i want to use, but it's about a 30 hour rendering process, 5 hours left

You are using the Vegas Mpeg2 encoder?

    Athlon XP3200? 30 hours?

Doesn't add up. Are you rendering effects as well?

Detail your encoder settings. Describe your source formats and project settings?

I actually don't have Magic Bullet Movie looks, but i'm using some digitaljuice lower 3rds here and there and a lot adjusting speeds and things of that sort on my clip files

    anyway, the rendering is DONE!!!

But yeah 30 hours doesn't sound right, i am not sure which Mpeg2 Encoder i am using, how do i specify it w/ vegas, i would like to use the best one and the fastest one lol

Vegas uses Sony's implementation of the Mainconcept MPeg2 encoder. You were doing far more than encoding. You were effects rendering and then encoding. I prefer to do those separately since 90% of the time, effects need another pass to get right.

Under Vegas "help" look up "Selectively Prerender Video".
