I know there are alot of topics about this, but I have searched everywhere, and can't make this work. I have an 700MB .avi file and seperate .srt file that I want to play on my DVP 642. When I burn them on my mac, no matter what I use, toast or the standard mac burn, the video plays great, but the subtitles do not work. If I transfer the file to my pc, and burn them with Nero or HP Record now, the subtitles are recognized, but the video does not play. I have tried everything, multiple times, from messing with the joliet options, and apple extensions, to adding ";" after the .srt and .avi file, but still no luck.

I don't really care if the subtitles are removable or not, so I thought I would use ffmpeg to burn the subtitles on. When I drop the avi into ffmepg, it comes up as :

    Avi

    mpeg 4, yuv420p, 640x352

    ac3, 48000 Hz 5:1 448kb/s

The first time, I tried to match the same audio and video options, because all I want to do is add the subtitles. The subtitles work in the preview. However, when I burn the disc and play the video, is skips and only the top half of the picture shows up. I tried it a second time, and this time I didn't encode the video, only the audio, but still the same problem. File plays fine on my mac, but when I play in on the 642 is skips and the bottom half is missing.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks alot!

    Pat,

I have the same machine and I really like it. The way to get subs to work is a bit involved but you'll get the hang of it quickly.

First and most important-- The name of the video file and the name of the sub file have to be the same except for the extention. For instance: Giant.avi, Giant.srt. The TYPE of disc you burn should be an ISO-9660. I use Discribe ot do my burning but I'm sure Toast allows you to set the disc type to ISO-9660.

Once you have burned the disc put it in your Philips and when the menu comes up you will seer your two files. Highlight the .SRT file and click on the SUBITLES button and a message will come up that says "DivX subtitles sellected". Now highlight and click on your AVI file and you should have both play at once.

This should work. Let me know if it doesn't. ENJOY!

    Tony,

Thanks for the help, but it didn't work. The movie still plays, but not the subtitles. I used toast, and burnt it as an ISO 9960. Also, in the settings commands, some one told me to check "Use Apple Extensions" and uncheck "Append Version Numbers". Also, the forman I used is CD-Rom, but I also have the option to do CD-ROM XA. And for naming I used ISO 9960 Level one, but I have the options to do Joliet(ms-dos and Windows) and Allow Mac names and Allow MS Dos names. Could any of these options be the issue?

    Thanks again for the help!

Yes, they probably are the problem but I have NO idea how to sort it out. My best suggestion at this point is to see of you can find a copy of Discribe. It has always given me great results with my Philips.

  5. It has been awhile since I did CD-Rs for my 642. These days I use DVD-RW discs, and all I have to do is:

    a) Burn the disc as DVD-ROM (UDF) under the 'Data' tab in Toast

    b) Append ';1' (remove quotes) to the filename. So if my movie and .srt files are called 'foo.avi' and 'foo.srt', I change the names in the Toast layout to 'foo.avi;1' and 'foo.srt;1'.

You might try adding (b) to your workflow under Toast's 9660 option.

Then, follow the directions for selecting external subs on the DVP.

    Good luck!

I tried that and it didn't work. When I pressed th subtitle button after selecting the SRT file (Which was a "?" on the menu) I got the dreaded little "hand". I also tried to select the sub SRT file while the AVI was running. Got the hand again.
