Got two vcr's from a thrift store one is a toshiba M-752 Six Head for $8.00 and was wondering what the switch for the 19micron head was for, options are auto and off. And the other is a Sony SLV-700HF for $12.00 with noise reduction. And just wanted to know if they were good deals, they both work fine .

For the Toshiba you can DL the manual:

The Sony isn't listed, just models above 772.

In general, take off the case and inspect the rubber tape roller, guides and head for wear or sludge. There is often a drive belt too, but that's harder to see and not worth replacing for the price of the machines.

If they work well, you got good deals on both of them. The Sony is a 1993 model, I believe. The six head Toshiba has two sets of video heads. Generally, you want to use the the 19 micron heads when you are taping or viewing EP (six hour) speed video tapes. For two hour speed tapes, you would want to use the other set of heads which are about 27 microns, I think. If you put it on auto, it should do that automatically.
