  1. Hi,
I am unable to copy a .dat file from a VCD onto my hard disk. If I try to do so, the copy process starts, then almost when it has to finish, it throws up an error.
ALSO, I cannot play this particular VCD on my PC.

I am able to play many other VCDs though...
    I am using a P4 machine, Win98, Media Player 7...

    Can u help me out??

    Thanx,
    beta.

  3. mh2360 is right on the target, is your VCD overburned ? cause that could be the cause of your problem, if you have a CDRW and you overburned using that drive, then use that drive also to read, and don't use Windows Explorer copying, use VCDGear or any other Raw Copy program.

  4. Betavin,

Hi. You may want to look for ISOBuster. It has really saved me from going bonkers at least a dozen times when files don't copy using other methods. It is freeware and simple to use. Run a search on Google.com and the host site should pop up within the first several hits. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me. Laters.

  5. ISOBuster is not totall fool proof when it comes to exgracting DAT's from VCD's.

I have a friend who has literally hundreds of chinese VCD's and usually it is possible to extract DAT's from most of his VCDs.

But there is this one VCD I came across that when placed in ISOBuster, it displays a fat RED CROSS by all the directories on the disc; when you try to extract anything from the disc ISO Buster will throw up an error at exactly 96%, regardless of the size or type of file. I tried to copy using Windows Explorer from 98, ME, XP home, XP prof, and 200 and all those flavors of windows could not even detect anything was present in the CD-ROM drives, this was done across three computers with various DVD, CD-RW, and CD ROM drives.

Funny thing was that I was able to extract 96% of the DAT, and extract clips from the DAT [after I renamed it to MPEG] and those clips were fine, but when I tried to burn the DAT back to VCD on another disc, the disc would not play in any of my Standlone's or ROM drives.

I highly doubt there are a lot of VCD's with this type of protection, but if anyone's interested in verifying this; it was a Donnie Yeng action flick that looked like it was done in the mid 80's [you could tell by Donnie's Miami vice like clothing]. Kind of vague, but hey I can't read Chinese titles!,

So maybe betavin has one of these RARE [based on the hundreds I've come across and created myself] VCD's with extremely annoying protection schemes.
