making a XSVCD or other High rez (above 352x240)

I have a Sony DVP-S550D and in the compatibility list XSVCD is greyed out with a "?" by it, but not lined-out. I'm trying to ripe the highest quality i can, can someone help me out here?

heh...Sony standalone dvd players have the worst compatibility. the best quality would be SVCD, but i believe most Sony's are not compatible with SVCDs. you may have to stick with standard VCDs...but prolly up the bitrate higher than the standard 1250 (i believe that's standard VCD 2.0 bitrate)

hrm...well..there's a couple of things u can do. first, make sure u set MOTION SEARCH ACCURACY to HIGH QUALITY (SLOWER). i'm not familar with XSVCD....but if you can try to use 2 pass vbr.

yes, bitrate does help. bitrate allocates more space for the movie. of course, that means your rip will have a bigger filesize, but better quality. something else you might be able to do is to increase the resolution. this doesn't affect the filesize, but will increase quality also.

however, i'm not sure how your sony dvd player will handle different resolutions and bitrates. best suggestion would be to try and test out your dvd player using CD-RWs. that way, if you make a mistake, you can always reuse the CD-RW.
