Ok Ritek has always been VERY reliable, some discs i've burned a few years ago still play great. However, some discs from a recent batch around the time ritek was said to have gone lower in quality, seem to be giving me "trouble".

The only DVD player i have is my PS2. A few discs will play fine but around the end, will start skipping and or stop playing. Not sure if its the discs or if my PS2 is just finally wearing out and finding it harder to read recordable media...

When playing the same discs in my DVD-Rom drive they play PERFECTLY, and even scan perfectly when scanning for errors in DVDINFOPRO.

So what could it be? My PS2 or the discs?

  2. You will need a PC with DVD reader to find out if they are going bad. Try scanning the discs on a PC with KProbe or Nero CD/DVD Speed "Disc Quality" test. Unfortunately, the drive needs the ability to report back C1/C2 errors. Not all drives do that.

Am I missing something here? C1/C2 errors only apply to CDs, not DVDs. If you mean PI/PO and PIF error scanning, that would be for DVDs, which the poster seems to have already done.

I no longer put a great deal of faith in PI/PO scans, other than to get a baseline of what to expect from a particular recorder.

Super Warrior: What are the media codes of the good and bad media? Are they mixed? Do you have any other media to test with (perhaps from a friend, say MCC or Taiyo Yuden). That would help narrow the possibilities.

    good luck!

I never thought to put "reliable" and Ritek/Ridata together.....but it may be that your PS2 laser is failing, if they play perfect in your DVD-ROM.

Get a new DVD player. Your PS may not be able to play them any more.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

I hope Its just the PS2. Would really suck if my recently burned Ritek's pulled a "Princo" on me and started dropping like flies, degrading and becoming useless...

Ritek used to be a Rock solid brand. Even guys like G4TechTv's Leo Laport recommended them. However, that may not be the case anymore due to the alleged recent lower quality their discs have taken.

I make sure to always burn at the slowest speed my burner does(2x or 2.4x) and leaving my pc unattended while doing so , afterwards i scan them for errors in DVDinfopro, then last i play them back in both my DVD player and DVD-Rom.

If they perform perfectly in those tests, which most have, then i keep and label the disc.

    Look at the variables here.
    1. Your PS2
    2. Your computer's DVD-drive.
    1. PS2=bad play
    2. computer's DVD drive=good play

Whether or not the media is going bad is immaterial. The disks play good on one machine and bad on another.

There is DEFINITELY a difference between the drives.

It might be something easy like cleaning your lens, or it might be something more esoteric.

Go buy yourself a cheap $30 DVD player and see if they play good there. Or maybe a cleaning kit.

  14. The last batch of 200 I got was $52.20 total including shipping from Shop4Tech. It was a 10% off Presidents Day sale. They have 10% off every holiday, just go to the website and sign up for their mailings.

It has also been found that the PS2's laser will eventually start to burn out if subjected to crap media. So it may be a case of crap media and crap laser.

  17. Those PS2s can get very dusty inside, the laser and traverse assembly both. Open it and clean the lens with a q-tip wet with alcohol. If the traverse assemble has a bunch of lint in it, clean it too and lubricate it with grease. I use Lubriplate grease.

Well since then i have re-ran tests in DVDinfopro with another disc that the PS2 was having trouble reading, as well as scanned them for errors with other programs like Nero CD-DVD speed.

On every scan my Ritek discs scanned flawless with no indication of any errors or bad blocks, etc. The discs still continue to play fine in my DVD-Rom drive too.

My conclusion, i guess it is just my PS2.

Although in the future when i buy more recordable media, i'll definitly start buying the higher quality Taiyo Yuden media from now on.

  19. Open the PS2 and clean the lens and spindle, it's not hard. The PS2s have an exhaust fan, so they are sucking dirty air through the unit anytime it's on. I've seen them so full of lint they look like a clothes dryer lint screen.

If you don't want to order check out Sam's Club. They sell a bundle of 50 MIJ and 25 MIT Sony for about $26.00 and the MIT +R are D...11 which are almost equil to the MIJ +R which are Taiyo Yuden T02.
Best Buy's Fuji and Sony MIJ are usually Tayio and are on sale for $14.99 about once a month.
