    DVDShrink

Anything but WinAVI. Try the freeware version of DivxToDVD.

DVDFab Decrypter, then DVDShrink usually works to backup your DVDs.

Never use Nero to encode. For VCD, use TMPGEnc to encode to VCD format(MPEG1). Use Nero to burn the MPEG1 file to CD using Video CD option.

You can get a free VCD encoder at http://tmpgenc.net

I like TMPGEnc, and its free version is unhindered. TMPGEnc Plus unregistered can also do it (you lose MPEG-2 encoding capabilities after 30 days IIRC).

EazyVCD. Actually uses vstrip, DVD2AVI, besweet and Tmpgenc (and optionally ChapterXtractor) and can create MPEG files ready to author or bin/cues ready to burn. Personally I don't see the point in learning the manual way when this software makes it all a breeze.

DVDShrink. DVDRebuilder is also well-supported around here. Don't forget to acquire a ripper such as DVDFab Decrypter, DVDDecrypter or smartripper also.

There are so many formats and so many user preferences that the one that works best for YOU is the software you should be using. Unfortunately you'll need to do a bit of experimentation, but I guess we can always cut the list down for you. Don't forget that while you're waiting for responses to questions here, that's time you could be "doing" instead of waiting

Take a look around here for how many posts that have problems with WinAVI. And don't forget that people associated with the company spam here every week.

I would second convertxtodvd for the quick n dirty jobs, but in all honesty, you just can't beat the flexibility of using dedicated encoders to really cover all situations.

Exactly. Nero is re-encoding. Which possibly means that your video wasn't VCD-compliant either. You can turn it off though - " untick the Create standard compliant files" (or similar) and it will just burn.

VCDEasy is well-regarded around here too.
    If in doubt, Google it.
