I think it is related to codec. Ever since I installed H.264 codec, TMPGEnc can only open video with H.264 codec not any other. I tried changing the enviromental setting giving higher priority and I checked the trouble shooting guide on TMPGEnc site. No luck.

All the video plays just fine in other video player and in virtualdub just can't get TMPGEnc to open most avi anymore.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled it already but that didn't work There is no option in remove program to remove h.264 codec. I could transfer video to my older PC but it's a pokey 450 MHz AMD and I remember growing long beard just waiting for it to finish a 1 hour video.

Any other idea? I'd hate to go back to DVD Movie Factory just for converting AVI to VCD It takes like 8 hours per 1 hour of video compared to maybe 1 hour using TMPGEnc.

I had the same problem when I first dealt with an h264 encoded avi. This is what workded for me:
I uninstalled divx and xvid codecs, and my old ffdshow too.
Installed the last version of celtic-druid ffdshow that was available at this moment. Configured the VFW to use its own built in libaxxx.ll, when available, and disabled the xvid and divx. Also set the h264 to ffdshow in its VFW configuration.
Last, I set to default the Environmental setting into Tempgec.
