do you always need a TBC if your recording VHS to DVD

i have the Pioneer DVR-630H

i connected my VHS to it and recorded a tape to the harddrive

do i need to get a TBC to put between the VHS and DVR

I have the 530H, and the JVC HR-S6870 VCR (I'm in Melbourne also). I use the ACE unit inbetween. I have the CTB-100 TBC also, but I've taken that out of the loop as the ACE (to me) seems all I need.

I really don't know whether you "need" a TBC. But IMO it helps - it provides a rock-steady signal to the Pioneer. Of course, it depends on the tape.

You know, I've fooled around heaps with PC capture & Avisynth & denoiser plugins lately. However the sheer quality you get from encoding straight into a standalone recorder is (IMO) right up there, the PQ is terrific to my eyes. There's a trade-off, sure, but FOR ME it is marginal. I'm fussy, but not "anal". :P

The ACE is great though, in fact I feel it "cleans" the signal to a certain extent, as I can actually "see" an improvement in clarity of picture. Plus, of course, it has hordes of proc amp abilities (plus more).

I ordered mine online, direct. HEAPS cheaper than buying local (retail). It delivered within ONE week!

In summary, I think only you can answer this question. Read around here, and see what a TBC does - and if it applies to your VHS tapes. If this is your hobby, well, then it's worth whatever the price - IMO!!!
