I'm looking for an app that will open up a video file and let me be able to scrub through it on keyframes and take captures to the clipboard. ie, CMD+right arrow advances one keyframe forward, CMD+left arrow one keyframe back. And CMD-C copies the current frame to the clipboard ready to be pasted into Photoshop.

VirtualDub is what I use on Windows, but so far I've had no luck finding anything like this on the mac. Is there such a thing?

  2. I think you can do this in Quicktime Player, both for Mac and Windows. Clicking the forward arrow while paused will advance a single frame. Choosing Edit > Copy will copy the frame to the clipboard.

If you are working with MPEG-2 video, you'll need to have the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback component, which isn't free.

    yes....it's called Final Cut Pro.

Everything you just described I did in Final Cut Pro last night
    in creating my vodcast.

It's expensive though. Can you tell me, what the shortcut is for advancing through the movie on keyframes?

"K" key for pausing playback of timeline
"L" key for advancing right through timeline
"J" key for advancing backwards through timeline

Hold "K" key down while tapping the "L" key
or the "J" key, and you can forward advance 1 frame,
or backward advance one frame, in 1 frame increments.
Need to go three frames back to get that still shot?
Hold down the "K" key and tap the "J" key 3 times.

    Then Go File-->Export ->Quicktime Conversion->Create Still,
and create your still to edit in Photoshop.

Thanks but you misread what I asked for. I don't want to export the frame, I want to copy it to the clipboard, if I had to export and open in photoshop for the number of times I do this it would drive me mad.

Also, I need to advanced through the timeline on keyframes.

Unfortuantely, since it is VIDEO you can't just cut the data to the clipboard
then paste it from the Clipboard into Photoshop. VIDEO doesn't work that
way, not like vectored graphics or bitmap complied images.
With video you have to compile the data stream into a format,
in this case to Quicktime to make a specific file type, then you can open that file type.

    read further here:
workflow to create stills from FCP

Here is also something new I found out in GOOGLING
    "Create Stills in FCP"
How 2 Batch Still from FCP
I'm gonna have to go through this one...it looks to be a timesaver!

    However,
Perhaps you might need to rethink your workflow....
What I do is get all my Still Frames exported to QT FIRST to a folder,
then I run a Batch Script in Photoshop to get them sized correctly
for iTunes/PodCast viewing, then I run a second script back on the
Original Folder of images to make web ready .jpgs for the website.

Make the computer work FOR you, not AGAINST you.

Also, I need to advanced through the timeline on keyframes.
umm...re-read my post? I laid it all out there, what keys you use
    to advance through timeline...J, K, L.
Hold "K" down to do in one frame
increments, Don't hold the K down, and the J and L advance through
at half speed, tap twice on the J or L, and they advance double speed
    through the timeline.

I want to copy just 1 frame to the clipboard not video. It can be done in VirtualDub and I think even quicktime to some extent so it is possible.

I think we have corssed wires again. None of the above tells me how to advance on keyframes....

ie. 'Shift+right arrow' advances 1 keyframe at a time. 'Right arrow' alone advances 1 frame at a time.

So if a video has 1 keyframe every second, pressing shit+right arrow will jump to the next second.

Correct, however the filetype is DEFINED in Quicktime.
If you open a MOV, or a MPEG-4 file, as an example,
the data is within a DEFINED container type, so you can
within Quicktime convert, cut, clip, paste within that container.

FCP's timeline however, doesn't behave like a Defined Container,
which you should think of as an end file. The Timeline in FCP
acts like a DATABASE for edits (clips) you have made from
various other end file types that FCP likes.

So let's go back some steps, and take the fact that I posted
pertaining to FCP and my workflow, and go over what you said:

Backing up to your original Post, you said:
I'm looking for an app that will open up a video file and let me be able to scrub through it on keyframes and take captures to the clipboard. ie, CMD+right arrow advances one keyframe forward, CMD+left arrow one keyframe back. If you meant a specific FILE TYPE, then yes, I didn't hear you clearly.
If you meant VIDEO itself, then I did hear you clearly.

( an aside: I offered my Steps in FCP, because I thought we were talking
about Video coming in, not a SPECIFIED video Type, such as an AVi,
.MOV, or MPEG-4. There is a Difference. VIDEO coming in can be
a DV STREAM, or it can be VIDEO created from an edit list [timeline]
like in iMovie or FCP/FCE. So for argument's sake we will say no FCP.)

As for what will allow you to do what you ask on a specific file types,
if it is Quicktime Compliant, (.mov, .mpeg-4, .mpeg, m2v),
I would say Quicktime Pro, but as far as batch capturing/exporting,
I wouldn't have the slightest idea. Again, it might behoove you
to change your workflow, and create all stills from QT Pro first,
( export to TIFF) then batch process in Photoshop.

Sorry, this I misunderstood, as I think I was relating more of how
to navigate within the timeline of FCP to get your frame for you
to create your stills. I apologize.

AS FAR AS FCP and KEYFRAMING:

To do advancing back or forward to keyframes 1 at a time, you can
turn on the Keyframe Display, then in the Timeline, press Option-K
to move your Playhead 1 keyframe behind ( to the left of playhead).
Or, you can press Shift-K to move the playhead forward to advance
one keyframe ( to the right of playhead.)

How this would be accomplished in QT Pro, I don't have a clue.

hopefully this puts us back on track.
