  1. Hope this is in the right forum.......

I have been backing up my DVD's using DVD Shrink for a year or so now and have had no major problems. About 2 weeks ago my backups started taking about 5 - 6 hours to fully analyze & encode.

I did some searching and found that my explorer.exe was using about 75% of my CPU in Task Manager. I read that I could close explorer.exe (loosing my desktop icons & start menu) but DVD Shrink would backup my DVD's in normal time.

I formatted my computer and reinstalled everything, but still the same problem. explorer.exe only uses that CPU when DVD Shrink is running. Any ideas on what could cause this and maybe a possible fix.

    THANKS ALOT AGAIN

The only time I had this problem was when I was running several operations while using DVDShrink. I was using DVDecrp on a DVD I have in my exteranal burner using DVDShrink on a differnatn DVD I had in my internal drive and downloading music through Limewire all at the same time. How much memory does your PC have?

  3. Something is definatly wrong with your PC because Explorer should never use more than 5%.
Download a system monitor that checks CPU temp, running process, etc.

  4. I currently have 1 GB Memory and it used to run fine when I had 256. I have even been able to encode just fine while using Internet Explorer and downloading music from a P2P. The only program I have running now while encoding is my AntiVirus (EZ AntiVirus which uses little memory).

I wonder if Windows Updates has something to do with this because I dont remember isntalling anything new on my computer. When I reinstalled my PC, I put all the old progs back on but did all the new updates as well.

    WHO KNOWS??????????

THANKS for the help, lets hear what anyone else thinks!!!!!!!

  5. Here's what I would do when encoding/transcoding:
    1.Disable internet access.
    2.Disable all anti-virus software.
3.Make sure nothing is running in the background(screensaver,PC monitor, etc).
4.Use Ad-Aware to make sure you don't have any spyware.

  6. I used to be able to use Internet Explorer and scan pics and have Antivirus working all while encoding before with DVD Shrink.

The only thing I can think of that i installed in the last few weeks is Windows Updates, Internet Explorer 7 Beta, and Windows Defender (All MS Programs)

Maybe one of those is causing explorer.exe to freak out when I use Shrink.?????????????

using Internet Explorer and downloading music from a P2P.
You do WHAT? Carefull what you mention!

There is something definitely wrong with your machine. Explorer would never run that high. I have a simmilar problem occassionally with Movie Player. After I get done viewing somthing and shut it down, I will notice my PC will run very slugish. A look at task managershows it running at 99% CPU. A force shutdown and all is back to normal. No idea what triggers it as it doesn't happen but accassionally
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

Why ? There's plenty of freely-downloadable public domain music out there ...... and linux distros

    To the OP:
Maybe there's something funky with your drives and their UDMA / PIO configs ? Perhaps the DVD Ripping speed sticky might have some answers also:

    If in doubt, Google it.

Yeah right, well....the PCLinuxOS distro looks kinda promising, dl'ed it last night, so not much time to play with it yet. :P

You might want to try system file checker, start->run-> sfc /scannow. Had a problem recently that bore some similarity to yours, system files getting corrupted, the ultimate cause was a hard drive going bad. Windows explorer was doing weird things on my computer, and sfc would (temporarily) fix it. You formatted recently? Shouldn't be having these problems, don't you think? Try also the other excellent suggestions. Good luck.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

Of course I only download legally.

I formatted, but before trying any backups, I installed all of my progs & windows updates. So if the problem is in something I have installed then I just formatted for no reason. I would like to not have to reformat and install each program one by one to see what is causing this error.

I also updated my drives firmware within the last week or so. Would that have anything to do with this problem. I would think maybe but why would everything work fine when I close explorer.exe????????

  11. Ya got me [shrugs]. My suggestion is merely a shot in the dark, but it's easy and quick with no chance of buggering anything. It might just come down to eliminating possible causes one-by-one. Not much fun.

Tried anything in the above posts yet?

I looked at what jimmalenko mentioned, but that didnt seem like what my problem was. (Thanks for the info though)

I tried start->run-> sfc /scannow but I have XP Home and it requires the XP Pro SP2 disk to copy some files. So that didnt give me anything.

What I did try was rolling back my Firmware, unsuccesfully I might ad.

Something that did work was running my computer in Safe Mode. Funny that explorer.exe runs in safe mode but doesnt freak out when Shrink starts to encode.

It has to be something that I installed. Just dont know what.

  13. Figured out my problem. I am using EZ Antivirus and when I snooze this program, I have no problems with DVD Shrink. Only problem is, I like to surf the internet while burning, so any ideas besides switching AV software?

  15. I am running a Socket A 1333 Athalon with 1 GB Memory and a Biostar M7VIP MB. Think upgrading my CPU to a 2600 Barton Athalon XP would help eliminate this problem????

    poolman,

I noticed the exact same issue a few days ago. I had ripped a movie with dvdfab decrypter, then brought up dvdshrink. I noticed it was taking an awful long time to analyze and process (over 4 hours). Ran task manager and noticed that dvdshrink was taking about 60% cpu, and explorer.ext taking the other 40%. killed explorer, just like you did, lost my desktop, but shrink finished fairly quickly after that. I rebooted. Then ran shrink again on another movie, and it behaved properly, nothing else using cpu. The reboot cleaned up whatever was causing my problem.

FYI - I'm also running the CA EZ Antivirus and Anti Spam.

Just thought I'd post this so you didn't think you were the only one with the problem.

Poolman, just a follow up, in case you still have problems. It is the CA EZ Antivirus causing the symptoms with shrink. Must have been a recent update they pushed out. All I had to do to resolve this issue is right click on the EZAV icon on the tray, and have it sleep while using dvdshrink. Works fine when av isn't running. No more explorer taking tons of cpu while shrinking.

    Thought I'd let you know

  18. Thanks for all the replies, I have been ripping just fine now for a couple of weeks, but having to sleep EZ AntiVirus. I have contacted them about this problem but their tech support has given me no help.

IF anyone figures out how to rip without snoozing EZ Antivirus, send it on this way.

Otherwise THANKS again for all the help.
