  1. Using my Canon XL1, I've recorded audio on the ST-2 audio monitor. The audio plays properly in the camera's VCR playback mode. The audio also plays properly after being captured by iMovieHD. But using Sony Vegas's Sony Video Capture, I cannot seem to capture any of the audio from the ST-2 audio monitor.

Also, if I remove a DV tape containing ST-2 audio from my XL1 and view the video in VCR playback mode on a Sony Handycam, the ST-2 audio doesn't play.

Since I can capture the ST-2 audio using iMovieHD and since I can hear the ST-2 audio in VCR playback mode on my XL1, I am certain the audio is being stored on the DV tape. But the ST-2 audio doesn't show up when the DV tape is captured directly from the XL1 using Sony Video Capture or when the DV tape is played in VCR playback mode on my Sony Handycam. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure on the XL-1 but many camcorders have a Audio1/Audio2/Mix switch (hardware or menus) that selects which audio pair goes out with video.

To get all for channels, you normally do a second capture with the other audio tracks selected.

I've never found a way to capture all four channels in a single transfer.

Since the ST2 is part of the DV stream, Vegas IS capturing it. What it's doing with it after capture is your problem.

My guess is that Vegas is tranferring that stream into the computer and saving it as a DV-AVI Type 2 file. And as such, it is probably putting IT'S preference for what should go into that duplicated audio stream--ST1. The ST2 still resides within the DV (IVAS) stream, but now that it's Type2, it calls that a VIDS stream, so won't look for it there.

Don't know a good freeware/shareware conversion option for you here, but Focus Enhancement's DV File Converter suite could do the job nicely. Unfortunately, it's ~$100US.

Maybe there's another capping app that allows pre-selection of the audio stream. Then you could just cap to Type2, and use the resulting file in Vegas.

  5. I used DVdate to convert the DV from Type 2 to Type 1, but still there's no sound. Any other suggestions?

Did you try the scenalyzer demo?

I wasn't suggesting you change type, just change the mode in WinDV confi settings. Some editors want Type1 others want Type2. But that affects all audio, not just the second stereo pair.
