Normal way, record/capture off the S-Video and audio outputs.

Anything else depends on which PVR/DVR you are using.

OK then, record to a DVD recorder and play the resulting DVD on your laptop.

Rogers box has no ability to transfer, burn or bypass encryption. This is not a typical TIVO. Google for solutions but since it's rented you are responsible for maintaining it according to EUA (no hacking, reverse engineering etc.).

Are you saying you can't feed the S-Video and audio to a DVD recorder and make a DVD?

And is Rogers really in New York now?

I'm not familiar with the box but real-time feed off RCA terminals is a possibility provided you also have a Macrovision defeater. They use Scientific Atlanta gear. Real drag and time consuming I guess.

Rogers in New York? Don't know. NYSE yes, but...
    any details?

Yeah if there is no way to "extract" the video then you are pretty much stuck running a video/audio line to a recorder and hoping it lets you do it.

Macrovision could get in the way but otherwise it should work.

perhaps because it sounds glitzy... or perhaps she commutes daily must be a real drag... since Toronto is Rogers's domicile

I must admit you have a good eye for detail

i have several Rogers HDTV PVR's ... i own them and dont rent them - so have taken them apart for the fun of it ...

you can output ANYTHING you have recorded out the svideo outputs (in SD) .. in fact it is super easy and rogers will walk you through it over the phone or see their guide online ...

just send it to a dvd recorder in fact ... no flags are set and no macrovision (that i have seen yet)

as for the firewire hookup it has - it is not active

you are not correct - is all i can say ... i own them and i tell you i have no problem outputing recorded material ...

you can also just capture off the component HD output also - though you will have a problem cap'ng the ac3 5.1 stream , but you can always just pick up the analog

Thank you all so much. Sorry for the confusion - I'm actually in Toronto. I think this thread left me with more questions than answers LOL You all are amazing..... I'm not sure where to go from here... Any suggestions? I have the 8300 PVR from Rogers. I noticed it has outputs & USB from the front.

You could start by asking more specific questions. Also video issues and solutions often differ by location and the equipment being used..

that may very well be, but most users approach boxes like this as equivalent to TVIO also with respect to captured material transfer (output to PC via data ports) I just pointed out that such approach is not possible here, sadly (no reports of succesful tapping into the box yet). Thanks for your input even though I said that capture from RCA should be possible. Except for Macrovision, which according to Rogers survives (?). See FAQ that I lined to.

ah yes == you are correct in regards to the data ports .

they are inactive as you pointed out ...

you cant send out to the analog ports from any "on demand" programming -- but so far ive not run across any macrovision - though i may have been lucky , or i may have hacked my dvd recorder (i dont remember)

here is more info on this box -- as well as info on a update to turn on the front panel inputs and the external hard drive sata connector

I've used the 8300HD with the Time Warner system. Not only can you export from the DVR disk, you can do it while recording two feeds from cable at the same time. The Motorola 6412 won't do that.

The 8300HD model even has separate composite outputs for "VCR" that can be used with a DVD Recorder.

as I recall extracting data from Rogers PVR is prevented due to the fact that it's encrypted read: useless. that may be the biggest hurdle. I admit I have no further detail but there's no "published" and credible info proving otherwise.

The data is optionally encrypted by the cable provider. That box has another significant feature. It can, at the option of the cable company, operate with an external SATA drive to expand recording capacity. From what I understand the data is encrypted to a single account so that the external drive cannot be moved to another similar box. The implication is the account must remain active in order to access the data on the drive.

Most of this is spelled out in the Scientific Atlanta documentation. I spoke with Time Warner and they said they had no announced plans to activate the SATA port or other future features that the box supports.

yeah, I skimmed through this, looks like a topic for another "mission impossible". The market is small enough so that no lobby powerful enough can be formed to make it more "user friendly"

you have to record them first to the pvr ....

then open the pvr list "list"

then select output to vcr --

this gets it out of the pvr .....

BUT you will need to capture the output - the easiest way i can think of is to use a video -> dv convertor ... many are mentioned here on the forum , not that expensive (the signal coming out of the pvr is very clean)..
your computer needs to have a firewire (sometimes called a ilink) port or a firewire card (cheap) ..

then use windows movie maker (free from microsoft) to capture and to create a windows (wmv) file ....

the above is the simplest way i can think of - and the most cost effective ..

in movie maker - you can edit the parts you want , before you create the final output

That is exactly what I do, but for my relatives and friends in Time Warnerland, I hooked the "output to VCR" to a DVD recorder.

The Scientific Atlanta 8300 or 8300HD has the second output. If you aren't in "output to VCR" mode, the second output is the same as the main output so you can simply press record on the DVD recorder.
