Ive always been interested in having an arcade game (maybe a desk type) or a pinball machine or both

has anyone got any and if so what's it like?

do you use them or is it just a passing phase?

The sit down table like ones are called cocktails. The two player ones like that where the video orientation flips around for player 2 is called a flip cocktail.

I don't have one but came within seconds of getting a Galaga flip cocktail years back for only $250 at a fleemarket type sale here in Dallas. Stupid search for an ATM took to long and I lost out.

My cousin has a bitching MAME machine though...

I've been thinking about building me one of these lately.

Has sound improved with the newer versions? I still use the 2001-ish version and have sporadic trouble with the sound on every game.

It was like a muffling, distorting, clipping effect to the audio. Got to try out the new ones. That was the only thing I hated about MAME (and the AR weirdness with some games).

    Hi,

My father used to build that kind of machines, from the wood cabinet to the wiring all of the electronic connections. He kept a couple of them in his basement for his amusement.

They were expensive, I remember once he told me that the price for a motherboard, for a game called Tekken or something like that, was of USD$1,000.00

It is funny, but one of the machines I saw him building consisted of a full computer placed inside the cabinet and secured with bands, he then installed a touch screen mouse for the user to interact with the machine.

    P.S.

    God, I want to cry.

Used to have 2 pinball machines before I got married. Sold those. 1 was Coney Island (1974)and the other was Pool Hall(1981). I got $450 a piece for them.

I always wanted to get the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Double Dragon, & POW arcade games. I like the Time Crisis Series arcade games. Wouldn't mind having any of those machines around.

I don't but my sister and husband have 4 in a games room they set up. 2 electronic and 2 pinball - original Ms Pacman, Dragon Slayer, Adam's Family and I forget the 2nd pinball.

I love the old school pinball but IMO wouldn't pick up the old electronic ones (that Midway one ps2daddy posted looks like a much better deal).

I have two that are similar to ps2daddy's link, but with about 2000 games on them.
I want to get a cocktail style, though.

What's cool is you can get kits now for BAR TABLE game systems. Really simple to make ones. It has a glass top with 2 screens so 2 players can play on opposite sides. You can either connect a PC or a regular game console inside. Many kits tell you where you can get the coin insertion panels & box, or you can just build it without.

One kit, I almost bought, had instructions for turning an NES, SNES, SEGA, or any ATARI system into one of these tables. You provided the console, but it had the 2 arcade style 6 button joystick panel with instructions on how to wire the connectors for any of the consoles.

These are similar but use a PC. These are also tiny and use 1 screen. The one I was looking at had 2x 13" screens for head-2-head gaming.

The console ones were cheaper, but the one I saw was on eBay. It was going for $350, and shipping was $90. That was a few years ago and haven't seen that style since. These aren't that bad though.

I agree that these are pricey, but if you're good at building things of this sort, you could try doing one yourself. You basically need a ventilated box that will support the weight of a CRT. You'll have to find your own joystick panel though.

cocktail styles are cool and I suppose it wouldn't be hard to make one thinking about it

but you'd only be able to play certain 2 player games on it due to the viewing position of each player

Well I've seen somewhere online those ones where people build a arcade cabinet around a pc monitor with the tower inside. Then they have the emulators all charged up but it looks like an arcade. Pretty neat.
