  1. Ok, here is what happen:

I brought a I/O Magic DVD-writer (IDVD 16DL). This drive has a BenQ coop and model DQ60 (dev 2005) on the drive. I use Nero and check and the dirve firmware is GREC. There is a new firmware on BenQ website for this model and its firmware is MREC.

I down it and tried to upgrade but it said 'Firmware or product not supported.' Please check FAQ in user menual for help files'. The drive that I brought does not have any manual. The I/O box only included the drive and a Nero CD.

The System -> Hardware -> Device Manager show the drive is ATAPI DVD DC 8X16X8X. (I am using Window 2K). I tried to uninstall the drive and reboot the system and it reinstall by itself still showing as 'DVD DC 8X16X8X'.

What is happening? How can I upgrade it?

You have a REBADGED BENQ DQ60 drive. You can not use the official BENQ FIRMWARE for your drive. You would need to go to the I/O MAGIC website to see if they have any new firmware for the drive. In device manager it will not show a BENQ drive unless it's crossflashed to a BENQ DQ60 which to my knowledge is not possible at this time. Check the BENQ FORUM on the DQ60 drive. From the reviews at the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com it isn't a good drive. The 1655 & 1650 are the drives that have gotten good reviews from members at Cdfreaks.com.

My suggestion is to return the I/O MAGIC drive and get a BENQ 1655 from Newegg.com. If you want a rebadged BENQ 1640 COMPUSA sells it under the NORWOOD MICRO brand. Newegg.com should be coming out with the BENQ 1650 soon.

  3. I brought this drive from Staples local stored when it's on sale for $19.99 After rebate & install save (was $89.99). I just happen have brough few of the DVD RAMs few Months ago. Only this DVD Drvie can read and write these DVD ram. I could be able to burn Playo +DVD at about 4X for a 8X DVD media. The I/O magic website said this drive does not need update any firmware!
I only want to upgrade because my computer said it is a ATAPI DVD 8X16X8X ?

What you have is a rebadged BENQ DQ60 drive. The only possible way to have your computer read BENQ DQ60 is to crossflash the drive to official BENQ FIRMWARE which I believe is not possible at this time. I suggest you ask the members at the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com for help. Or return the drive to Staples and buy the latest LG or PIONEER drives that have DVD-RAM capability. You could wait to see if someone at Cdfreaks.com comes out with a flasher and firmware to crossflash the I/O MAGIC drive to a BENQ DQ60. It's been done with the rebadged BENQ 1620, 1640 & 1655 models. I've crossflashed many rebadged 1620 & 1640 drives and only then will your computer read BENQ 1620 or 1640.
