  1. I just compiled ffmpeg on Intel with the SSE optimizations. Results are quite good so far, and faster than G5 Dual:

Encoding one minute DVD (NTSC) :

    ffmpeg divx 640x272
    Rosetta: 2' (14.4 fps)
    Universal: 29 sec (60 fps)

    ffmpeg xvid 640x272
    Rosetta: 3'27" (8.3 fps)
    Universal: 37 sec (47 fps)

    ffmpeg DVD 720x480
    Rosetta: 1'34" (18.4 fps)
    Universal: 18 sec (96 fps)

I now go ahead with mplayer/mencoder/x264.

    Impressive numbers!

  3. Compiled mpeg2enc and mplex on Intel with optimizations. Benchmarks so far (encoding one minute VOB) :

    DVD mpeg2enc 720x480
    Universal: 66 sec (21.6 fps)

    Excellent news!!

Why not release a beta version for the Intel Mac using enthusiasts among here?

    As i expected.

Confirmes the fps of the universal versions from isquint and handbrake.

  6. Compiled x264 on Intel. Encoding with x264 h264 (640x272) gives about 40 fps. Only mplayer/mencoder is now left.

One can only imagine how fast it will be on a Quad-Core/Dual-Processor.

My dual-CPU 2.0GHz G5 tower's AppleCare doesn't run out until October of 2008. Guess I'll have to hope it self-destructs in early 2007 and Apple replaces it with something Intel-igent.

True story: My DP1.25GHz G4 developed problems Apple couldn't fix so they swapped it for a DP1.8GHz G5. (Yes, I had AppleCare.) 11 months later the DP1.8 G5's power supply bit the dust and, as Apple was out of power supplies for my unit (they were in the process of building the dual-core units which, apparently, use a different power supply and the factory couldn't break into the production run), they swapped my unit for a DP2.0GHz G5 (one of the last they had in stock before the dual-core announcement).

Yes, AppleCare was on both units and they even refunded most of the $$ I spent on it because of the age (11 months) of the DP1.8. Did I buy AppleCare for the DP2.0? You bet your arse!

So I'll wait patiently until the AppleCare runs out or, as I said in my first post on this topic, Apple just gives me a new Intel box when my current unit dies. As Judy Tenova says: "It can happen!"

  10. Compiled mencoder for Intel. The 3-figure barrier has been broken:

100fps for DivX mencoder (a movie can be encoded to DivX in about 20 minutes).

Still working at some optimizations and a problem with ac3 decoding. I hope to release within a week or so.

    100fps - for which values ?

Was the movie full PAL ?

One thing i miss at ffmepgx combined with streamclip - ffmepgx only likes "mpg", not "mpeg" from streamclip.

Any change to add this ?

  12. Same values as for the above tests, one minute NTSC DVD to 640x272.

i was trying to compile ffmpeg and mplayer, but keep running into errors. what config parameters did you use?

  14. You have just to work 22 hours hacking the files (and still I have some problems left with ac3 decoding in mplayer).

  15. Major,

Sounds like you need to post some of your hours:donations benchmarks!!! I hope a lot more people would donate when they find out how long it takes to keep this app up to date and running. I know it's a labor of love and all, but when you get v1.0 out, price it to make your efforts worth it.

    Thanks for all your work,

    Matthew

  16. Thank you for your support. Indeed it is a vast amount of work, and 1.0.0 feels like building the Great Pyramids.

  17. Can't wait to use ffmpegX in UB 8)

Thank you so much Major for the time you are spendig in making your software better ad better day after day !

    Respect!

What is your Intel configuration? And what Dual G5 are you taking as example?

Maybe an Intel CoreDuo 2.0GHz and a Dual 2GHz G5?

  19. Intel CoreDuo 1.83 Ghz and dual G5 1.8 Ghz.

  20. major,
any chance you tell us what did you hack to enable MMX? I checked some of the forums and they all say that there is a bug in the compiler for OSX and it always fails. I had to disable MMX to get it to compile, but as you may know, the results are not that impressive. I get around 40s for one minute video, and that is only on one CPU. Still much better than Rosetta.

  21. I made lot and lot of modifications, I didn't track them, for now my goal is simply to make it work (I have still some problems with ac3 decoding).

Lot and lot of modifications...from your writing i've the feeling you write everything new instead to modificate. O.o

The 15$ are really a must be here.

Dont feel too bad. DivX hasn't gotten it to work either, haha.

Any updates on how this is coming?

  25. Everything is done but the ac3 issue. I'm hunting the source of that problem and hopefully it will be solved in matter of days.

Thanks Major. You are a star. Looking forward to trying out the new version.

EDIT:: Don't know if it's any help to you or anyone else here but someone has done a new build of AC3 for intel Macs dated yesterday so it's pretty fresh.

Hey major will the DVD tools be intel native as well?

  28. I'm doing my best to universalize all the tools.

Fresh, and still crashy unfortunately, particularly in Front Row (component bungholes Front Row every time I try to play the file). I'm going to mail the author and beg him to do a CoreAudio implementation of a52dec using liba52 from http://liba52.sourceforge.net with a SMAC wrapper. That way all CoreAudio applications will be able to decode AC-3 and the SMAC wrapper will mean that the same CoreAudio component can also be presented to QuickTime for decoding.

Shepmaster at http://shepmaster.thefridgeowl.com did a CoreAudio wrapper for liba52 but neglected to implement the SMAC wrapper, probably because Shep's approach is just a rip of liba52 into Apple sample code (no disrespect Shep, if you're watching, no point re-inventing the wheel !). I'm no coder, so I'm reduced to begging for this stuff

Heaven only knows why QuickTime doesn't just use CoreAudio instead of Sound Manager now, but I guess that's down to Apple.
