I need a vcr that records both VHS on VHS tape and SVHS on SVHS tape. The recorded tapes must then be able to be played back the same way: VHS tape in a VHS deck and a SVHS tape in a SVHS deck. I am finding that the JVC vcr's record SVHS on a vhs tape but it cannot be played in a vhs vcr, however I hear the SR V101US model may accomplish what I need. ??? Thank you.

  2. It's not true S-VHS recording unless it's done on an S-VHS tape. There are standard VCRs that will play S-VHS tapes, but they do it in standard resolution. Any S-VHS VCR will record VHS and S-VHS and will play both.

  3. My JVC HR-S3800U records VHS on VHS tapes which can be played back on any VHS or S-VHS tape player. It also records S-VHS on S-VHS tapes which can be played back on any S-VHS tape player.

What may be confusing is that JVC will also record a hybrid called S-VHS ET which is S-VHS recorded on VHS tapes. These tapes will likely only be playable on JVC S-VHS VCRs.

As long as you avoid S-VHS ET then JVC S-VHS VCRs do exactly what you want.

Turn off ET mode. Read the manual.

Why don't you check this thread out before making your desicion.

The local shop has not looked at mine yet.

Other than the color banding, both JVC's do a nice job; even the 2901.

I really did not see a big difference in picture quality on most of the tapes when comparing the 2901 and the 7600 even with changing the settings. I guess I will see a substantial difference when I get a really crappy tape to convert. What a bite!
