  1. Hello

    I'm using Gordian Knot.

I have a source video size of 352x576, its a VHS recorded to DVD via my Liteon in 4 hour mode.
When i rip the vob's to my hard drive and use a program called VOB2MPG it plays back fine at 4:3 ratio in Winamp, WMP, Real etc
But when i use Gordian to covert to Avi, no matter what ratio or new resolution size i put in (in Gordian Knot when coverting), my output Avi becomes squashed, i.e it is displayed at the correct reolution, which is 352x576 (squashed)
352x576 seems a strange resolution to me.
I understand that dvd players etc will resize the video to 4:3 play back, but how do i get wimamp etc to display my resoluton in 4:3.
It seems Gordian Knot is ignoring my output resolution, as i have tried using a resolution wider than taller when converting to avi.

    Please help

    Many thanks
    Cheers

It should be resized to something with a 4:3 ratio. 352x576 is not a strange resolution - it's one of the PAL DVD standard resolutions. (1/2 D1) Also known as CVD resolution.
Actually, once did this and by mistake came up with a 352x576 AVI. Played correctly (@ 4:3 ratio) using my standalone DVD/AVI player on TV.

You can use MPEG4Modifier to change the PAR so that it resizes correctly. Won't work with all players though since some just use 1:1 no matter what.

There's a aspect ration flag in the file header... If you open it with GSpot you'll see your source is set to 4:3. Open your newly encoded file and you will see that it is set to 1:1.

You have to specify in the encoder what the aspect is, how or if you can with the encoder you are using I don't know.

Unfortunately, some AVI players ignore this flag, and play @ 1:1 PAR regardless of flag.

  6. i see, thanks, think i'll dig out the VHS again and re-record on 2 disks in 2 hour mode (720X576). The program I am Ripping from VHS is in 2 parts anyway. Its about 3 hours 20mins in total.

Thanks for your most excellent response.
    Cheers
