vcd 2.0 is stereo only, if you want surround you have to go to svcd.

  3. no this is not true, you can downmix the dolby digital to pro logic (pro logic aka dolby surround is from two channels). I have see a couple programs that do this. DVD2AVI is one and i think that i saw the feature in FlaskMPEG.

  4. Both the common methods of ripping (DVD2AVI and FlaskMPEG) will down convert the 5.1 Dolby Digital signal to a Dolby Surround compatible stereo stream ("Pro Logic" is strictly speaking the decoding technique -- the encoding is called "Dolby Surround" only).

A Dolby Surround signal can be put in any stereo signal -- i.e., TV, radio, CDs, MP3s, etc. Indeed, many modern CDs are Dolby Surround encoded. If you have a Pro Logic decoder attached to your DVD player, you will be able to hear the additional centre and surround channels when you play your VCDs.
