I've just encoded a movie in tmpgenc that had a frame rate of 23.976 fps and I used the "3:2 pulldown when playback" encoding option under the video tab, however when I playback the finished mpeg movie on my pc it runs quite jerky, I don't want to burn it to dvd incase it runs like this on my player. Will it run alright on my standalone player or will I still have this problem? And if so is there an easy solution?
Cheers!

Hi,
In my opinion it probably will jerk on your stand alone player if it is on your pc.
Are you trying to convert from 23fps to 25fps if so the easeist by far to do this is either use Thefilmmachine or Avi2dvd with these two programs it makes it very easy to get from avi to dvd and convert from 23 to 25fps with an excellent quality outcome. both these programs are free to download.. try em -

What was your source material ? For all 23.976 source I encode to 23.976 with 2:3 pulldown and get no jerkiness (except what is in the source from time to time). Converting to 29.976 will give you jerkiness if duplicate frames are created to fill the gaps (depends on encoder).

My material is an avi file which plays fine. For encoding I use tmpgenc, I used encoder option "3:2 pulldown when playback" and encode with 23.976 fps. There is however a filter option under the advanced tab for 3:2 pulldown, would I be best to select that instead of the encoding option?

You are better off encoding at 23.976 with the pulldown flags. Are you sure the filter isn't for removing the 3:2 pattern from 29.976 material ?
As for why someone int he UK would encode 23.976 material to 23.976 ? Because the majority of PAL playback equipment will play NTSC material, and it is far preferable to watch it native than try to format convert.Read my blog here.

Do not use the 3:2 pulldown filter (on advanced tab.) That is for doing hard telecines to 29.97fps. As already mentioned you just need to enable the 3:2 pulldown when playback option on the video tab, as you are doing.
Double check one more time to ensure that the source framerate is 23.976fps. If you cannot get it to encode correctly then try going into the environmental settings and increase the priority of the direct show file reader VFAPI plugin. (right click and increase until its first in the list.) This can often eliminate decoding problems which can result in jerkiness. But if the jerks are at consistent intervals than forget about this advice, its got to be something to do with the framerate. -
OK if you have a 23.976 avi and want it to convert to 29.97fps use the filmmachine but in the options from either ntsc 2 pal or pal 2 ntsc leave alone dont tick anything been intouch with the maker of the program and he said 23.976 is automatically pulled down to 29.97 so no option is needed. its a free program and easy to use thats the easy way of getting your 23fps to 29fps keeping it in the ntsc format in a couple of clicks.i have used tmpgenc and many programs over the years and have found this to be an easy answer.
