    Hello all,

I have some ASF files from a client that were recorded on a Samsung SCD107 digital camera. The files are mpeg4 video with g.726 audio.

Is there any successful way of converting these files to any another format so that the audio actually plays? The 0.0.9t version converts the video just fine as an AVI, but no audio.

I read through some of the other forum posts and tried some of the things suggested like using the ffmpegx 0.0.9s, which did not work. I was running this on a Mac with 10.3.9 on it. I have also tried running ffmpegx 0.0.9t through to the latest version under 10.4.4 with no success.

I have a 29 MB sample file available for anyone that can help.

Any help or info would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks for your time.

Mplayer and ffmpeg should support G.726 decoding, according to their respective webpages, so make sure Quicktime decoding is OFF. Also VLC supports G.726, so you could try dumping (exporting) the audio from that app.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply ...

Neither Mplayer 2 nor VLC 0.8.4 play the audio either. This is the error message from VLC:

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `g726'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Exporting from VLC does not provide any success. VLC reports this:

    stream_out_transcode: cannot find decoder
    stream_out_transcode: cannot create audio chain
main: cannot create packetizer output (g726)

I have read info at Flip4Mac and they seem to have problems with the G.726 codec as well. I tried the Flip4Mac, the latest version, software. I get green screen for video and when it attempts to play, crashes very badly.

Just an update for all of those people in the same boat ... Flip4Mac released a new version 2.0.2 of their software yesterday ... and guess what ... it works. I gave them $29.00 to upgrade to the Pro version to allow me to convert the ASF files from Quicktime Pro ... and guess what ... it works.

I hope the ffmpegx Gurus can fix the problem in ffmpegx, because I would rather spend money on a lightning fast universal conversion program like ffmpex rather than a 1 trick pony in Flip4Mac.

Hope this info helps others. Feel free to contact me if you need assistance working out your ASF/G.726 file problems ...

I have a Panasonic camcorder that produced asf files with audio encoded with something like g726, although I would have to dig through my notes to be sure. Anyway, I was finally able to get ffmpegx to convert them to iPod format by downgrading to an older version. I think I went back to version s. I read about a bug in the newer version that broke that decoder. Anyway, I have since upgraded to u and it doesn't work. I'll have to dig up my old copy from archive.

Whoops, I didn't have to dig through my notes to see what codec my camcorder uses, I just had to play it in VLC and look at the statistics window. Duh! It does, indeed, encode audio with g726. One of the older versions of ffmpegx definitely converted that to mp4a (aac) for me.

I know this is an old thread and I don't know if anybody else is following it but I just tested ffmpegX version w and it now converts the g786 audio into m4a (aac)... woohoo! I can load all my camcorder footage into my iPod now.
