so it doesn't matter which i use? so i can burn data or author on any format?

they are just 2 different standards. they are pretty much the same, each with very small differences.
-:
-slightly larger in size (about 7mb)
-some say is slightly more compatible with older DVD players
-in build quality tests, -R, in general, have shown to be built slightly better.
-a true DVD format (has the rights to carry the DVD logo)
+:
-burns slightly faster (maybe 15 seconds tops)
-some say its actually more compatible, when the booktype is changed to DVD-ROM
-is not an official DVD format, so it does not carry the official DVD logo.
the small diffences between the 2 isnt important. what you do need to know, is that some DVD manufacturers make 1 standard better than the other. IE, a lot of people prefer Verbatim + media over - media etc. The + standard makes a much better RW and DL (dual/double layer) media. -R DL media shouldnt even be considered, as +R DL media is much more stable. although, the ONLY DL media you should buy, is Verbatim.
hope that helps. -
xycer, you hit it dead on.........a little note though, i can TESTIFY personally that dvd-r IS in fact more compatable...at least with one of my old dvd players, it wouldnt even take a +r disc with the booktype set, but it took the -r media just fine...shouldnt matter much though, if your dvd player is relatively recent or if your using your pc drive for playback....
