  1. I have been looking around, and there are a lot of programs (virtualdub, autogk, etc.) that will convert vobs to avi. I was wondering what the best tool was to take my vobs and convert them without quality loss into something that cce 2.7 will accept for encoding? Ultimately I want a format (possibly avi or mpeg) that would be best for storing on a hard drive and playing throughout network.

    any help would be appreciated.

If space isn't an issue, then just copy the dvd images to your HD. You can then just mount the images and play.

If you are concerned with space, then you would want to convert to avi using the latest divx format. You can do that with autogk.

If they are DVD compliant VOBs, you wouldn't need CCE unless you mean to reencode them to a smaller size MPEG.

But if you want to save space, AutoGK may be a good choice, or if you just want them to a MPEG format, you could use VOB2MPG.

If you have decrypted DVDs, you might look into FairUse Wizard for an easy way to convert them to Xvid format. A regular DVD will end up down as small as 700Mb with good enough quality for the small screen like computer monitors. With that size, you can get quite a few on a hard drive.

  4. Thanks guys...I should have also told you that I streaming these from my harddrive (nas) to my highdef projector. But, yes, space does matter, but I don't want to give up too much quality.

The usual method of re-encoding a DVD with CCE is to RIP the DVD to your HDD then run the VOB files through DGIndex which will give you a D2V file and split out the audio file(s).

Then you create a simple to complex (depending on what you want to do) AviSynth script that loads the D2V file (the video) and you input that AviSynth script into CCE.

Pretty basic stuff really with the only somewhat new "thing" being the use of DGIndex instead of DVD2AVI since DGIndex is a newer "better" version of DVD2AVI.

Many guides cover this example I just gave.
