I was trying to burn a dvd from my harddrive to a dvd-r using the latest version of nero express (first time using nero) on a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5200 using TDK DVD-R 1-16x dvds. After adding all my video files and clicking burn, Nero would give me the error message, "Sorry, your compilation cannot be written on this kind of disc.... Disc required for the compilation: DVD-R/RW ... Disc type in the recorder: CD-ROM" I've tried a few different discs from the stack of DVD-Rs and they all detect as CD-ROMs. Is this a problem with the discs, my drive, or Nero? Or am I doing something else wrong? Thanks for any help!

What color is the back side of your alleged DVD-Rs?
    ICBM target coordinates:

Most DVD-Rs that I've seen are PURPLE on the bottom. DVD-R/W are mostly a dark blackish-blue on the bottom. What does Nero's INFOTOOL say about the disk (usually in the \NERO\TOOLKIT directory)?

It's a deep blue/purple (more blue) on the bottom. Just the standard TDKs you buy at bestbuy. Hrmm, the info tool said"no disc", when I ran it the first time. I ejected and reinserted the disc and hit refresh. Came up as DATA CD (Mode 1) Capacity 3728:16.16 (32768 MB) Tracks 1. Disc status Closed, finalized.
Never finalized this disc btw. just a new one i popped on from the stack to test for you.

  6. umm....maybe try a differant burning program? I haven't given it a run yet, but maybe imgburn as far as a free burning program........i still personally havent ran into anything that nero wouldnt take...also you may want to check your dvd burner's firmware to make sure that it's up to date...i know that this in the past has been known to cause incompatabilities.......other than that, i personally don't run a standard desktop and i sometimes have similar issues and a reboot fixes it....this particularly happens when im using nero image drive to mount an image, and after unmounting the image, the computer occasionally acts a little funny.........maybe just a simple reboot if you havent?

I'll give another burning program a try. I've already tried reboots/driver/firmware updates with no luck. I've never really tried burning with anything besides cds at home. I've always used work for burning dvds. kinda sucks :P just bought a 100 pack of these dvds and really wanted to try burning some movies from my vid cam. if anyone else has any other ideas please let me know. heard a lot of good things about nero and wanted to give it a shot.

    According to this:

That drive is pretty old. With all of this 16x media floating around now it may be having trouble with the higher speed. Without the proper firmware from Toshiba I doubt it can handle the newer media.

I always use Nero Express because it is dummy-proof (to a point). I have observed that in the upper right corner there is a drop down menu giving one the choice of DVD burner or Image file. Further choices are whether you are burning a CD or a DVD, and I have seen the error that you have experienced when CD had been chosen on a previous project and I had not selected DVD instead. Why not try this and see if it solves your problem, too? Just make sure to select your DVD burner as your recording device!

Tried 2 different types of dvd-r (x8, x16) and 3 burning programs now (Nero, Roxio, Instant CD/DVD) and unfortunately I think Hech54 is right. All of them as well as windows detects the DVDs as CDs. Time to buy a new burner I guess. Thanks for the help guys! Great forum.
