I just burned a DVD image onto Memorex DVD+R DL disk (Disc ID: RITEK-D01-01) using DVDDecrypter. The DVD plays fine in my DVD player (both layers) but when I try to rip it all three of my DVD burners (Pioneer, Lite-On, Toshiba) stall at 50% (I assume this is a layer break) and keep retrying, but without any success. Is there a trick to ripping DL media or is this simply the case of Memorex DL being a piece of junk?

If you have made it, there will be no copy protection. Don't rip it. Just copy the VIDEO_TS folder onto your harddrive.
Jagabo, please do not reply to this post. Thank you. -
Personally, I've never had any luck using Memorex DLs. I've always had great results with Verbatim.

Thanks Anakin; drag-and-drop copying worked fine. What is the recommended software for buring DL disk in file mode, and do I need to worry about setting layer break? I assume that I can't use DVDDecrypter to burn the files onto DL madia since the program has no support for file-mode writing.
Just out of curiosity, why would drag-and-drop copying work and ripping wouldn't? I'd think that both methods essentially do the same thing.
I just tried ripping Fujifilm DVD+R DL that I burned some time ago; worked without any problems. So I guess Memorex is a more problematic DVD medium. -
I've had issues with all kinds of Memorex media. Strongly advise against using anything with their name on it. :P

as far as dual layers, yes....only one near stable at the moment is verbatim, and i've even had one of those fail out of a 3 pack (only dual layer discs i've ever burned personally) i'd wait a little while longer myself before making that jump as a standard........never had any issues with their single layer or their cdr though....

I have a new method that I use for Dual Layer +Rs that has been flawless for me considering the number of botched ones I did with my old method and DVD Decryptor. Kudos to Car.Mike at Afterdawn for this method. I also used Fuji (RicohJapan) +R DL:
"If you are doing a D/L disk you do not need Nero. Rip the disk as per the instructions I gave ( see below) and set up DVDDecrypter and AnyDVD ( 21 day free trial - so you might as well try it. If you like it then you can buy it)
Instead of writing using DVDDecrypter I want you to use the newer burn engine by the same author IMGBurn : http://www.imgburn.com/
Instructions Rip w/ DVDDecrypter and AnyDVD- Burn w/ Imgburn:
1.In DVDDecrypter go to Tools> setings>General> untick Check for Structure protection
2.Now go to I/O and tick ELBYCDIO-Elaborate Bytes
3.Enable AnyDVD
4.Now insert Movie( foxes head turns red) and go to Mode in DVDD>Iso read> click the decrypt button. It will create 2 files- image and a .mds file
5.After ripping turn AnyDVD off ( right click taskbar foxes head and click on exit)
6.Open ImgBurn> Tools> Drive> Change Book Type>DVD-ROM
7. Now go to Mode> write> find the .mds file you created and click on it and the hit the write button
I have found DVDDecrypter or Imgburn find the layer break better than Shrink or Nero but if you are happy w/ your method then by all means use it." -
BTW the layer break info needed is present in the .mds file as I understand it.

Thanks for the info LT9000, but if I'm reding your posts correctly the istructions are for burning ISO image (which I'm doing cuccessfully with DVDDecrypter) rather than DVD files (.VOB and others) in VIDEO_TS folder that I got by dragging-and-dropping the folder onto a hard drive from a DL DVD disc that, after being successfully burned, cannot be successfully ripped. So I have VIDEO_TS folder with all files that needs to be burned onto a DL DVD, and I'm wondering about a reliable software (Nero?) that would let me burn a DL DVD in a file mode. I guess the easiest way to go about it is to create an ISO image from the folder/files I have by using one of available tools and then use DVDDecrypter to burn the image onto a non-Memorex DL disc.

None of this is making any sense.
"Ripping" is a special term that means little more than "extract data from an optical disc". It has nothing to do with copy protection. Indeed, "ripping" a disc is preferable to trying to let some OS copy the files, especially if the goal is to re-burn a new copy, or to extract the DVD-Video data for editing.
You always have to have a layer break set correctly. Most software screws up. DVD Decrypter does not, provided you use it correctly.
To burn DL media in DVD Decrypter, you need TWO FILES. The ISO is just raw data. The MDS stores more advanced information, such as the layer break. Be sure you create an MDS at rip, and burn off the MDS not the ISO.
"Memorex" is just a brand name. They do make DVD or CD media. They put their name on somebody else's disc. Memorex always buys the cheapest shit they can find out of Taiwan (they at least have enough sense to not use Chinese/HK garbage). In the case of DL media, they use RITEK.
RITEK DL is god-awful media. Ritek SL media wasn't all the super either, nor was CD-R. If you have trouble with it, the disc was probably just a bad burn.
Best case is the second layer was burned badly when the disc was made. Not sure what you can do here.
If you have DVD-Video in VIDEO_TS folder structure, and want to burn to DL, you can try and use RecordNow 7 and take a stab in the dark. Pray it sets the layer correctly, or at least good enough. Alternatively, make an ISO, and then let Decrypter make it's own break. Again, pray.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Anyone tried this method already? -
Here is what I did to burn the VIDEO_TS folder transfered from my DL Memorex onto another DL disk:
1. I loaded the folder with all video files into DVD Shrink via Open Files option.
2. I selected No Compression in Video Compression Settings
3. I backed up the project by way of using 'ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter' option under 'Select backup target' in Target Device backup setings.
This created an ISO image which was automatically burned with DVD Decrypter onto a DL disk. There was no need to set layer break. I tested the burned DVD in my DVD player and it works just fine.
It appears that my initial problem has been solved. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
