  1. When I encode an AVI to DVD mpeg and try to play it with WMP it won't play, PC freezes and i have to reboot.
but they will play with VLC.
GSpot can find the audio codecs for it but not the Video.
    any ideas?

  3. already had powerddvd, installed Dscaler and same problem.
also noticed (before i installed Dscaler) when i exit VLC ram goes down from a GB to 230 MB!? also cpu at 60% this lasts a couple of mins then returns to normal.
EDIT. WMP playing the encoded mpeg but it takes about 3mins to load.
have no other proplems on PC except this.

  4. EDIT (had too much THCs) it is only encoded mpegs giving me problems and the only thing that plays them properly is TMPGENC Author.

Some apps (like PowerDVD, VLC and obviously windvd) use their own codecs, while WMP and others use DirectShow to decode the a/v. If DirectShow (part of Windows) is f*cked up, all apps that uses DirectShow will appear to fail, where it's actually some part of DirectShow that's having troubles.

Installed any codec packs? Theyt tend to wreak havoc with Directshow. There's utilities like CodecSniper to remove unwanted/troublesome codecs.

  9. no codec packs, I've been on here long enogh to know to avoid them lol
tried codec sniper it picked one up i deleted it but same problem.
guess i'll just have to use windvd to view mpeg2 dvd.
i only preview them for sync probs anyway before authoring.

  10. sorry i could'nt let it lie.
when i right click on the mpeg explorer.exe makes cpu goto 60% and available ram goes from 750MB to 250MB
i have to open windvd first then open the mpeg from there for it to work.
have been googling but no success.

That's probably explorer trying to generate that preview, using DirectShow.

Think it's the same reg hack regardless of file type.
