    I thought there was a crop that lets me select a specified section of the video and discard the rest. But I can't find them in the filter and resize is not quite right.

    What I wanted was to get a portion of the viewable area to eliminate the extra on the sides and top. For example the video I have is 640x480 but it shows more than I wanted and I wanted to crop them using the crop area (example) from 0,24 to 500, 480

    If that is the only filter you need then the fastest way is to add the Null transform (it does nothing but it exposes the cropping option), then click on cropping and adjust the x and y as needed.

    This isn't necesssary but if you want to resize back to original resolution then add the Donald Graft's Smart resize filter after this (I prefer his) and set the resize options.

    Go to video , filter's ...

    You will see "crop" box (greyed out) .

    Apply resize filter , hit ok .

    Now you will note the "crop" option is available

    Do what you need now ...
