I hope someone can help me. I have used ffmpegx and followed ALL the instructions to get it to convert .ram files to DV...i place the .ram file i want to convert in the window and then in the source format window, the video and audio says no video and no audio and when i click encode i get this error and i get this error

    Apple Script Error

Can't get text item 2 of "Binary file (standard input) matches". (-1728)

what does this mean? i mean i have downloaded all the files requested...download the files to convert real player files and renamed the folder and still nothing

    help please!

  2. Possibly the .ram file is not a .ram file. Try to rename it .rm instead. Also, .rm to .dv is not supported, you must choose a mencoder preset like "mencoder XviD".

Is the extension of the file truly .ram? And, how big is it?

.ram files are usually just the information files that point to the actual RealMedia video/audio to stream, in my experience.

hello and thank you for your responses. I did change the file from .ram to .rm and it recognized it in the open window up top but in the Source Format it stills shows no video and audio

and when I click encode it tries to encode it using one of the mencoder presets and its a 0K file.

Each .rm file is about 3.2MB...is that too big?

let me know what I am doing wrong.

    Thanks for your help.

Well, the type of .ram files I mentioned are usually only a few KB as opposed to MB, so... ^_^

Do the files play correctly if you load them in RealPlayer, or mplayer, with the appropriate Real packages installed? I'm not sure if mencoder/ffmpegx handles all the different compression methods used in RealMedia files... Major would be better able to answer that than I.

  6. Posting the actual process output (blue "i" icon in the Progress window) would help to determine the problem.

    Major,

This is the message I get in the Process Output: (this after selecting AVI DivX in the target format window.

Do you think me being on a mac is the issue?

Why would go RM > mpeg4 > DV > DVD, when you could do RM > DVD in ffmpegX? Two extra steps and a huge quality loss by using an interlaced format as DV, assuming your original is progressive...

Well i was told you can't convert from .rm to dvd ...i tried it and it failed

so it was suggested to pick like AVI DivX with mencoder.

    is there a quicker way?

    any help would be appreciated

  13. You could use "DVD mpeg2enc" with "Decode with mplayer" enabled.

    thanks!

I tried .RM to DVD mpeg2enc and it would fail

i'm on a Mac...can I use Toast 7? i tried to put the files directly into iMovie but i would get an unknown error right when it finishes importing

also, i have 22 of these .rm files...each is about 2 min so I am wondering what owuld be the best way to handle this. Its 22 clips to one movie and I want to get each .rm file into a DV or some kind of file so i can go into iMovie to do some slight editing ( hoping to have the best video quality) and make it into one movie .

    Thanks for your help.

Did you enable the "Decode with mplayer" option?

Yes I did but it would create a DVD folder for just that one file and I have 22 of them. So i guess I am trying to find a way to get all of the in a DV format then put it in iMovie and then edit it and then burn to DVD
    Quote Quote
  18. It would also create a MPG file first. And then you can use any authoring program like Sizzle or DVD Studio Pro to make a single DVD folder from many of them.

OK I have tried to convert my .rm files to DVD and i select DVD mpeg2enc and select encode with mplayer..in the video window i selected 4:3 and DVD and check: "encode video" and had no luck....

and when i tried to put the avi files i created using FFmpeg into iMovie to do some editing it would fail right at the end.

    HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP.....lol

and after several minutes it says it failed and this is what i get

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
    ************************************************
    Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
    - Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
    - Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
    - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
    - Slow video output
    - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
    - Slow CPU
lay a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
    e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
    - Broken file
    - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
    - Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
    - Try -cache 8192.
    - Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
    - Try -nocache.

yes i did..but for some reason it would cut the file time in half...for instance the clip is 2:08..and it would 1:17 and very fast...never understood that

man this is becoming problematic...i never knew it would be this difficult to change .rm file to .dv or DVD

Perhaps it is because the source has a framerate of 15fps. Try to convert it first to AVI with the "DivX mencoder" preset then. Then convert back the AVI to MPG with the "DVD mpeg2enc" or "DVD ffmpeg" presets.

You have luck to be in 2006, as this has been perfectly impossible for years.

I noticed that too. The stable build has 47 files; all .bundle files dated september 2003. The daily builds only has two files cook.bundle and coreres.bundle. While these two files don't make mplayer working for RM clips, they work fine if you use the two files from the dialy builds to replace two files of the same name in the stable build.
It's weird how none of that is explained on the Helix site, tho'.

  24. VIP,

You said you have Toast 7... I use ffmpegX, Toast 7, and MacTheRipper for a variety of tasks, and I have been able to convert to/from most formats.

If you just need a quick RM->DVD solution, Toast 7 can do this. Make sure to go and tweak the options (More button in video.) Unfortunately, you lose control when using Toast, but it might just be a quick fix until you figure out your ffmpegX setup for these files...
