  1. hi,

i have been using Pinnicale instant copy for about a year or 2 to backup my DVDs. at the time a did a fair bit of research into the most suitable software for good quality, easy to use, quickish software.

i have spent a bit of time researching and wondered what the current leader is?

i dont mind spending a bit of cash on it, nothing majorly expensive though!

i was something with good quality, easy to use, and i dont mind waiting a few hours.

however, as it must be easy to use and easy to burn the file onto DVD (i could use dvd decryptor with instant copy) i dont want to use CCE, and i recall this being v expensive at the time.

    any advice would be great!
1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!
    2) If your question has anything to do with copying PS2/PC/XBox games, find a more appropriate website

  4. Instant Copy isn't bad at all, it's kind of in a category of its own. It works somewhat differently than the more common transcoders like DVDShrink and Rejig, et. al.

It's also somewhat slower than the above, as you probably know.

If there's a "leader" I dunno, people have their preferences here. To get better quality, however, it's safe to say you should look into re-encoding. DVDRebuilder, for instance, is easy to use, with a freeware version and a pro version. The installer has everything you need: Avisynth, some free encoders, etc. But it's considerably slower than IC with the free encoders. Some people are satisfied to let it run overnight. Others have opted to buy CCE to get decent speed. There's a basic version of CCE available, BTW, for about 60 bucks, capable of two passes, which is all you really need to do DVD backups.

Others will probably have their own suggestions/favorites. Good luck.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

Use the installer version if you are new at it. It installs and setsup up pretty much everything you need.

Personally, I think the venerable DVD Shrink is still a very capable program, and for movie only backups that don't require much or any transcoding, it is fast and reliable. If I need to take more than a few % off the size, I use DVD RB.

I have been using Shrink to backup my DVDs to DVD-R\+R for over 2 years and have not experienced a problem or loss of quality of any description. I use Shrink to Rip, Re-author, Edit and shrink then DVD Decrypter to burn. I burn at 4x regardless of the speed of the material I am using.

For compressions < 80% I choose the Smooth rather than the default sharp as that performs a double pass to improve quality. Sometimes I take a backup disc to my Sons house to view as he has a 10 ft. projector screen and the viewing is still as good as the original.

Both of these Applications are FREE.
