  1. Ok, if I purchase a commercial PAL videotape, can I play it in my American vcr, capture it with the ADVC-100, encode it to NTSC using TMPGEnc, author/burn to disc using Ulead DVD MovieFactory, and view it on my American DVD player? I'm in the market for wrestling ppvs and the PAL tapes seem to be a lot cheaper than the US versions of the same tape. Would this conversion method work? My vcr is an Orion VR0212. Would any VCR playback PAL tapes?

    no
yes, if you have a PAL VCR
no, search forum for PAL to NTSC conversion
    no

"and view it on my American DVD player?"
at the end of a long process this is possible but quality will suffer.

Have you Googled the VR0212 for PAL capability?

You haven't located yourself. In the US the default is no for PAL.
Look for Multi-System VCR. Multi-system VCR's are expensive. Google your model numbers before buying.

My advice, buy PAL DVDs. Those you can play on a computer at least.

PS: One solution, buy a cheap PAL VCR (ebay?) and use your ADVC-100 to capture or play as PAL. Then you can watch on the computer or convert to NTSC DVD using one of the techniques.

    Here's one: _http://www.barrel-of-monkeys.com/graphics/prod/multisystemvcr/multisystemvcr.shtml
    VCR $349.00

    Customer Review:
"I bought this multisystem VCR so we could watch tapes purchased in Europe and Russia. After shopping around quite a bit, I finally decided this was the best "bang for your buck" and bound up purchasing it at Barrel-Of-Monkeys.com.

The main problem I wanted to solve in purchasing this particular multisystem VCR was that I needed a VCR that would do more than just play PAL and SECAM tapes... I needed one that would actually do the multisystem PAL/NTSC conversion so that my NTSC Television would be able to play PAL/NTSC VHS. Its an important distinction because there are plenty of VCRs out there that will play PAL/SECAM, but you must have a monitor capable of showing those formats. This multisystem VHS player and recorder actually does all the conversions enabling you to watch your international VHS videos on any regular American NTSC TV set.

In fact, it doesn't just convert one-way. You can, for instance, play an NTSC tape out to a PAL or SECAM monitor or a SECAM tape out to PAL or NTSC...it also supports multple power voltage, types of input/output cables... it really IS a "World" multisystem VCR.

There are also lots of great features that add class to this multisystem VCR. The list is long and I discover more of the features all the time. For instance, the remote control glows in the dark to make it easier to find. Or, when you're taping something off the air, it will notice you are running out of tape and slow down to a lower format to try to fit in what you wanted to tape. Or if you go to do a timer recording and the tape in the VCR is write-protected, when you turn the power off it will eject the tape to warn you. It also has mostly "useless" features like the ability to put artistic effects on whatever you are watching (either live on the air or off a tape) or to pause video that is live on the air."

You need a VHS VCR that can play back a PAL VHS video.

Here in the USA you can get one of two types.

One is what we call a multi-system VHS VCR. It has the capability to play NTSC, PAL and SECAM but will only output the original. Play a PAL VHS and it will output PAL.

Two is the conversion type of VHS VCR which can play back NTSC, PAL and SECAM and do conversions. Here you can play back a PAL VHS and output it as PAL or as NTSC.

As you can imagine the first option is cheaper than the second option.

If you go with option one you can play back the PAL VHS as PAL and capture that to your computer. You can then burn a PAL DVD and play it back on a DVD player that does PAL to NTSC conversion. If you want you can convert to NTSC on the computer (still must capture as PAL) then burn a NTSC DVD although that is a lot more tricky then just keeping it PAL from VHS to DVD and letting a DVD player handle the conversion.

If you go with option two the output will already be converted to NTSC so you can capture it and burn to a DVD or just watch it straight from the VCR to your TV.

For a multi-system VHS VCR that does no conversion I would advise you go with the TOSHIBA V-E61 which is a 6-Head Hi-Fi Stereo model for only $129.99 at WORLD GIFT CENTER

The Samsung SV-5000W is your best bet for a multi-system VHS VCR that can do PAL to NTSC conversions. This model is a 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo unit and can be bought at WORLD GIFT CENTER for $329.99

WORLD GIFT CENTER is just one of many on-line websites that sell multi-system video equipment. Another good one with cheap prices is 220-Eelectronics

To find more simply do a google search on "multisystem" or "multi-system"

    P.S.
Please note that for some reason the WORLD GIFT CENTER website "pushes" the use of a separate unit for PAL <--> NTSC conversions. This device (I have the CMD-850 so I am speaking from experience) is utter shit. The Samsung SV-5000W actually does a fairly good job if you want conversion without the use of a computer.
