I use Trillian 3.1 Basic with AOL, MSN, Yahoo and ICQ accounts as it's far easier to keep track of all the people in my buddy list. A few days ago Trillian lost my sorted buddy list and a few years of buddy list arranging disappeared forever! I've added around 20 in the last few weeks due to something I'm playing around with but I lost all the details such as alternate name, links etc . I've managed to put some people back into groups again but for some names I can't even remember where I know them from and never will

seeing as I'm starting again sorting my buddy list and probably have a clearout, can anyone suggest anything better than Trillian I should look at?

I also have Skype but I don't use it that often as I only have around 12 people in that buddy list but most use MSN etc anyway. Skype is great for audio chat though 8)

I use MSN, it's a great free way to communicate with my mates in uni's across the country and back home.

Gotta agree with the Smurf on this one. I hate IM. Used to use MSN because it was used for support at a past employer. In the end I got sick of it popping up and annoying me all the time because someone else was bored. My home PC is a IM free zone, and a better place for it.

I use MSN for friends and family, mainly for computer support (remote desktop). I usually leave it off unless they phone me first... Too many feel obligated to say "hi" every time they see me on line.

Skype for my poker buddies, turn it on when I'm playing or interested in playing.

GAIM here...although it seems to be incompatible with the latest version of GTK otherwise it's fine.

I use Trillian again. I switched to GAIM but couldn't get something to work right and so I switched back to Trillian since I was so familiar with it.

I think IM annoying but I only show as available when I want to be, normally I'm always set to invisible. I have a lot of friends overseas so IM is a great way to communicate once in a while. Otherwise I don't use it much and only set myself as available when I feel like talking to people. I disabled all those silly noises and notification for when people log on/off right away, that's simply not needed.

  17. trillian...ever since i discovered it, i've been using it.....i've got family members that i dont get to see too often and a few people that i ONLY talk to on the net....IM'ing is probably the best way i have to talk with them other than racking up a huge phone bill...

I didn't want a poll as I'm not really interested in the individual IM's :P. I should have been more clear . I really wanted to know if there were any other multpile IM alternatives rather than sticking with Trillian. I don't think it's the only multiple IM program that's available though but I'm still confused as to what alternatives there are . I've had a look at GAIM but I'm not sure that allows audio

I also came across Miranda but I'm not too sure about it

    http://www.miranda-im.org/

I don't want to use the individuall MSN, AIM, Yahoo etc messengers as firstly they are all full of excess crap plus it would be very awkward having that many open at the same time

for now I guess I'll just stay with Trillian 8)

Never looked before. Don't think so. Basic IM client, I don't think it even has smiles unless you add one of the many plugins. Its suppose to be tiny and run from anywhere including a floppy disk or even a thumb drive.

for those who use Skype as audio, do you think it's better quality than MSN/AOL etc?

I use MSN/AOL audio via Trillian and Skype is far better 8)
