    Hi all,

I have a Mac (Powerbook) and I've never been able to play and AVI video file; either from downloading a video from Limewire that was AVI or streaming and AVI video on Windows Media Player.

My friend told me to download VLC Media Player, which I did but it never solved the problem.

What do I need to play AVI files?

    Thank you all.

AVI is a generic term. It's a video file that's not a MPEG, other than that, it doesn't tell you anything.

But if VLC won't play it, it's probably a strange codec or corrupt. VLC plays most anything.

You would get better answers about Mac software in the Mac forum. Moving you.

Download and install these 3 codecs and you will be able to play most .avi and .wmv files within QuickTime. (click on the links)

I downloaded them all and the video on AVI's play fine but I get no sound. I tried to fix it and tried changing the audio under audio/midi input but that wasn't the problem.

    What do I do?

    Edit. Serbian was faster.

Just in case, unzip the component and drop it in:

Macintosh HD / Library / QuickTime

I downloaded it and then got a message "Safari can't open the file "AC3 Codec.component" because no available application can open it."

First, I would recommed you to turn off the "Open safe files after download" that you can find in the General tab of Safari preferences.

Second you do not need to open the "AC3 Codec.component". Just take that file and drop it in:

    Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime

Once it is there, QuickTime will be able to play AC3 audio.

I found an avi online, but when I try to play in VLC, I get the message...

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `IV50'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Is there something that I need to load to play?

    @ jbcandkc

I think MPlayer is the only player that will play that codec in OSX.

If you dropped the "AC3 Codec.componet" into the QuickTime folder whilst QuickTime was open you need to quit it and re-launch it for the component to work. Do you get sound now?
