I have been using Decrypter (ISO Read and Write) to obtain the best quality possible when backing up whole DVDs.
Previously, when I used DVD Shrink (without compression) the quality of the result was not nearly as good.

Sometimes I still wish to delete trailers and other unncessary materials before burning (again without compression). Is there a way to enhance Decrypter or another program that allows these features and provides superior quality backups?

The changes made to a backup made to a DVD via DVDShrink without compression are SO miniscule that the human eye will NOT be able to tell the difference. The changes made are only structural.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I'm afraid and I doubt there will be any chance of changing your views on this issue....so the answer to enhancing DVDDecrypter is no.

Given the above posting, I am wondering why I am seeing so much difference between DVD Shrink and Decrypter.
Perhaps it's because of the Nero used by DVD Shrink. It is Nero 6? Is that very old?

It uses the version of nero that you have installed on your computer, and it uses it for burning only which doesn't affect the quality.

  6. ...or use ImgBurn which is the successor to DVDDecrypter,IMO Nero uses an inferior burn engine.

Quality differences -- haven't noticed that myself. But apparently some differences are possible. I just backed up a DVD-9. First, I ripped with the latest release of Fab Decrypter, then I used Shrink to back up with no compression to a Verbatim DL, using a Pioneer 108 burner. I've done only a quick check of the backup so far, but in standalone players the choosing of chapters does not work at all. The disc freezes, but not completely since I can back out of this. Otherwise, the movie will play fine from the beginning, and Special Features can be accessed. Most Shrink-made discs have turned out fine for me, but probably not all of them. I don't recall seeing this particular problem before, though.

On another backup made recently with Shrink, again without compression, I noticed some screens that showed prior to the Main Menu were clipped off at the bottom, like someone erased the lower 15 % of them. Strange.

Shrink is clearly the easiest, and a one-stop solution, but maybe too many of us choose it too often for that reason. This encourages me to explore some of the other alternatives more often, such as Decrypter ISO Read / Write, and the tandem of Folder2ISO + ImgBurn. The problem I've had with the former -- and maybe this is just my ignorance -- is that I can't find any way to use DVD Decrypter without a source DVD. When I've tried to use its ISO features on material that is already on the hard drive (say, courtesy of Fab Decrypter), I get nowhere.

Sounds like what he wants to do is trim out some of the material in the main movie without compressing. This is possible in DVDShrink (you don't always have to shrink it!) but only in a limited way. I used to have some success with Cuttermaran but lately it's been letting me down -- especially when it comes to syncing audio and video. It goofs that up a lot!

So in short I don't have a better solution for you but cuttermaran is worth a shot.

Seeker47: you can mount from the hard drive using Daemon Tools. I just did it for the 1st time this AM.

I personally would not trust DVDFabDecrypter for backing up a D/L to a D/L disc since I have seen very little documentation as to how it handles the layer break. I have done two such backups with DVDDecrypter that turned out perfectly....well almost....one sucked because it wasn't a good disc(blank) to begin with....live and leard I guess.
And I honestly cannot see any reason to use DVDShrink to backup a disc that you do not need to remove anything from or alter in any way....again for the questions I have about the layer break info.

I've only burned a handful of DL disks (5-6) I found out that Folder2ISO will not produce usable DVDs in either my computeror my stereo DVD player. The only way I was able to get a useable DVD was going through DVD shrink and making the image there. My progression is:

DVDFabDecrypter (to Rip) ->DVD Shrink (create image) -> Imgburn (burn DVD)

    What method to others use?

Rip with dvd decrypter and anydvd.Burn with record now deluxe 7.3.I'm not sure if any minor modification to the original before burning to a dual layer will affect layer break, but so far so good for 1 to 1 copy.

Folder2Iso is a general ISO creator, but I use ImgTools Classic for my DVD ISO needs - never failed me so far.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded last night. I'll give it a try the next time I burn a DL disk.

I second that...and I use MenuEdit to "clean" up the menus.

It makes me wonder, too. Since both of these are being ripped with no compression, they should both be identical to one another. And if you've burned them with the same program, and used the same media, there shouldn't be any differences. You might need to doublecheck everything and look again.

    Absolutely correct.

Folder2ISO is used to create a data disk iso, and works flawlessly when used that way. When you want to create a video disk iso, you use ImgTools Classic. Two different tools for two different purposes.

If you are going to burn the iso to a dual layer disk, PgcEdit is useful to check/change the layer break (guide here).
