I'm adding subs to a bunch of AVI files I've extracted from high-quality DVD sources.

Since they're from solid DVD transfers there's very few problems with the picture quality - but yes, perhaps a little macro-blocking or something here and there.

I was wondering though - what simple filters could I run the AVIs through in either Vdub or TMPG, in order to get an even better, cleaner, and/or sharper-looking picture. So I'm just looking for some good general settings that I could apply to all kinds of different high-quality sources that would make them look subtly but noticeablly better.

I need SPECIFIC settings though - such as "use the sharpen filer in TMPG at 40" or "run Vdub with the dynamic noise reduction at a threshold of 12," etc. Reason being, because I know that all my expirementing has done nothing but confuse me.

Also...is what I'm asking even a good idea or is it likely that I should just leave well enough alone and not risk adding more noise or other issues via unneeded/excessive filtering?

Unfortunately, all our artistic sense are rather subjective. Only YOU can decide which settings are "better" for you. After all, we can't see your screen from here.

Right, I hear you. But just in general what are some good settings to apply that will get rid of what would be considered relatively minor macro-blocking and noise, without compromising other parts of the picture?
