I am running on Windows XP and every time I pull up a divx file in explorer, it closes and displays the "Explorer Not Responding" prompt. When I try to open a xvid (divx) file with wmp or powerdvd or any other media player it will display the same prompt and will close down the application. Why is it doing this? What can i do to stop windows from crashing every time i try to open or do anything with a divx file??

It sounds like Explorer is having a problem associating Divx type files. Maybe too many codecs or some are interfering with each other or some are corrupted. I hope you haven't used any codec packs.

You could run a program like Codec Sniper and see if you have some corrupted codecs or some duplicates.

  4. The file that you are trying to play might be corrupted. You could try to download it again.

After doing a Google search for 'divx crashes explorer', I find this is not uncommon. Seems a combination of SP2 and the use of older Divx codecs is one cause.

Maybe one thing to do: Uninstall Divx and Xvid codecs and install the latest versions. Make sure SP2 is up to date also. It's not caused by SP2, it's apparently a problem with Xvid/Divx. Also ffdshow if you have it. After you do your unistalls and reboot, see if the problem is gone before you reinstall the updated software.

If you get nowhere that way, do the same Google search and see what other fixes are available. The Divx site http://www.divx.com/ has some information on it also.
