  1. need to read asf file - microsoft media player of course asking for license etc... I know most players removed support (such as videodub) because of microsoft demands.. Are there any free players left on the net that would still read the file?

Mplayer, BSPlayer are two freeware players that mention ASF support. I usually just convert them to a more usable format with SUPER, which seems better than installing another player.

Media Player Classic also plays ASF files.
But if WMP is asking for a license, then it sounds like a DRM file

That's the exact same thought I had.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Unless it was a single, fairly small (less than 100M) file downloaded from a BT site, and it had LOTS of seeds and only a few peers... that'd make it a sly spyware install.
Perfectly legal to download of course - no law against downloading adware or spyware, then going to a site to obtain a "license" or "update" so it can install itself onto your machine.

    Yes, but considering
microsoft media player of course asking for license
, I highly doubt that Microsoft media player would try to obtain any licenses for spyware or adware
    If in doubt, Google it.

You're probably right, it's just that there are an awful lot of encrypted BT files around that require a "license" or "upgrade to your software" before you can view them, and I was wondering if WMP was seeing this as DRM, whereas MPC etc. just wouldn't play them
